Several years ago, Ford helped a man buy and operate a dealership through their diversity program. Everything seemed to be running along fine. In the middle of the day, Ford representatives, the police and I think the IRS came in and locked down the place. Customers who had their cars in for repairs could not get them. The mechanics could not get their tools and nothing could be removed from the premises. After a couple of days, the people were able to bet their property and Ford removed all of the vehicles.
The dealership never reopened and we never found out what happened.
I don't have a problem with minorities but there are problems with diversity programs. The problem is the same as the problems with the current rash of mortgage defaults. The owners get the property with little of nothing invested and if times get tough, they have nothing to lose. Since they have nothing to lose, they have little reason to try harder to keep up with the payments.
When our local Ford dealership went bankrupt, (the owner built a brand new dealership in the middle of nowhere), Ford sent a rep down to take over. They sold off as much as they could in 30 days and then Ford came and took all of the remaining cars back.
Down in Long Beach where I work I just dont understand the "density" of new car dealerships. There are two each Ford, Chevy and even VW within a short distance. That doesnt count a major auto mall and additional free-standing Ford and Chevy dealers in nearby towns.
