You may have read my previous post about Sudden Power Loss wherein I went through the motions of trying to figure out what was wrong with the truck. Well having no luck on my own I took it to the dealer and had them diagnose the problem. They said injector #4 was bad and the IDM (Injector Distribution Module). Total cost to repair would be $2040.00. Does this seem possible? I don't trust dealers to be honest. So I'm asking you. What is the prupose (other than what it sounds like) for the IDM? Can I get one from the parts store? What about injectors? It sure runs rough for only one injector to be out. Hope you can help before I make any bad descisions.
IDM= injector drive module. I bought one for a friend for $200. 99-03 are interchangeable. Look on fleabay, you should be able to find one. A stock injector can be had for about the same price. you can fix it yourself for less than $500 or get the parts and take it to a shop.
I was gonna say the same thing -- for 5-6 hundy you could do it yourself. I'm stil looking at changing out #8 because it's so friggin' noisy. It's on my PMS to-do list...
You can, but if it's bad, then it'll need changed anyway. One thing I keep hearing is that the dealers "like" to replace injectors. A friend of mine used to take his to the dealer when it would have issues, and he would always mention "The truck seems to run rough occasionally" and ended up with a complete replacement set after a few trips. He's done the same thing with his 6.0. So it could be the IDM is the main source of your problems, but keep an eye on the injector, too.
I don't even want to pretend to know much about these things, but I do know what I would do, more so after hearing some of the horry stories from dealers. I would get my own IDM. Replace it myself, drive it and see what happens. That could be your only problem. All depends on how the dealer checked things. They may have one of them "Well, I'll tell you what it sounds like to me" mechanics, and not the one that says "We need to run a full set of test before we spend this mans money". like the others said, even if both are a problem, that's way to much money. Some of the smarter guys will be around later and have better advice. Good luck and keep us informed.

Just found a rebuilt with a 1 year warranty on ebay for $249. It can't be hard to change. The injector, according to the dealer, ohmed out at 2.7ohms. Since I don't know what normal is I can't say good or bad. But one cylinder not firing isn't going to be a rough as three or more. Right now it feels like only half the cylinders are working. Dealer said that it would "Run" on three cylinders, which it feels like. I'm gonna do it one at a time. I can always get to the injector later and spend my money over a couple of paychecks. BTW I found the injectors on ebay for $127 - $189 as opposed to dealer's $360. Thanks everybody for helping me come down off this freak out!
well, what year is your truck Scott????
did you guys think about dreaded UVS harness?
maybe the plug is loose, and it will give IDM codes, and might give injector codes????
this would be easy repair, just my 0.02
Yeah we went through that and it is covered in my previous post. I started a new post because this is a new chapter in the Fixing Of The Big Truck Saga. The truck is an '02 F-350.
Scott, 1 bad injector will make the truck idle like crap, and run almost as bad. I had my #7 injector go bad at 212K miles, replaced it and all has been fine since. start with the injector first then go to the IDM (IDM is electronic and not returnable if opened) just my .02
