Recently when i start my truck it will idle up to about 1500rpm for a second and drop to low idle, almost choking its self, will stay low for a second or two and come back up.. is this normal? or is it a sign that the IAC is going? Not too sure what to think of it cap and rotor was replaced about 4000 miles ago and this little prble started mayb 3500 miles ago. Any idead? suggestions?
The best thing you could do is check your codes. I have the same issue and it isn't constant and I went ahead and replaced the IAC and low and behold.. no change. I've heard that a racing/fluctuating idle can sometimes be attributed to a bad EGR valve. But I'm waiting on delivery of a code reader so we'll see.
you can pull the IAC off and clean it.......takes a few minutes.....lots of TB cleaner.........might help.......but the codes can tell you which way to look too.
EEC on those trucks will not set a code for a sticking IAC, only a bad one. Clean it and see. If no difference, replace it, if not that, look to the EGR system..
My '93 had been doing the same thing for quite a while. I recently had to replace the ACT sensor and have not had the problem since. Another possibility for you to check.
If you clean the Iac valve, clean the T-body too. Intake cleaner and a toothbrush. Disconnect the batter to erase the Idle stratagey, so it will relearn.
Hey, Road Virus...ACT refers to Air Charge Temperature sensor. It is also referred to as IAT (Intake Air Temperature?)I think. I bought the part at Napa and they list is as Air Charge Temperature. My Haynes manual uses both terms.
Mine idle was all over the place, and stalling, a year or so ago. I replaced the throttle position sensor about $60 and cleaned the throttle body It's been great ever since. The book says do not clean the throttle body because it has a coating. I did it anyway, what's the alternative.
The coating thing that ford does is a bunch of crap, its supposed to protect against carbon buildup, but it doesn't do its job at all. I ve probably cleaned hundreds of those throttle bodies, with no ill effects.

I just did my 04' this weekend. It was giving major pain. Stalling and knocking. I used a citrus based cleaner. It runs great now.
i dunno about cleaning a IAC ..... personally I've never had luck doing it . If there is carbon in the TB around the plate .... spray cleaner on a rag and rub it until its clean . That will probly cure the surging .
The IAC valve is harder to clean then the t-body, but I usually just sprat it down best I can with Intake cleaner, cause you can never get a brush in there.

How much did it cost you for one of those puppies? And whereabouts is it located? Thanks.
