5.0 idle problem! I put a new ford reman in my 91 f150. I put a motor that was suppose to be a 94 roller motor after the motor was in the truck I came to my first problem. The spark plugs would not screw in. Wrong plugs for the heads! I fixed that then the spark plug hit the exhaust manifold. I then found out that it has the GT40P heads. The motor runs fine cold and when it heats up to normal temp it starts to idle too low then goes to fast idle and back again. I have replaced all of the sensors but did not replace the idle control, knock, map or the o2. If I pull and plug the vacuum line to the EGR valve it idles fine both cold and normal temp. I have only run this truck 20 miles everything works perfect but the idle. It will die or surge at stop lights and run fine down the road or on the high way.<o></o>
My other problem is how do you search on this forum? I have looked at a couple hundred threads but have not found the answer I need. I know it out there and I hate to bother you all with a problem that has been talked about before.<o></o>
well it sounds like you got a few issues here. that motor should have been for an exploder and not an f150. does that motor you bought come with a spec sheet? find out what the cam specs are and post. also pull codes, www.fordfuelinjection.com has instructions and lots of efi info i suggest you read. your 91 is running speed density efi by the way. who did the motor install?
The motor did not come with a spec sheet. I installed the motor and I am running speed density efi. When the truck idle smooth the EGR is steady not moving. But when the idle goes up and down the EGR is moving up and down too. When that happens if I pull the vacuum line it idle smooth again. Now the EGR is not new but is clean and it moves freely. The intake was cleaned before I put it together. I wonder if maybe the EGR controller is not working right. Maybe it is sticking or moving to slow. The GT40P heads do not have the air tubs in the heads so I do not have the smug pump on this motor. I did hook the wires up to the vacuum control for the smog pump. This truck sat for 4 months while I got all this done. I am going to drive it this week and see if it fixes itself. I do need to recheck the TPS it is new but the throttle stop screw has been adjusted.

The Egr should not be doing anything but staying shut at idle(disconnect for now) I bet you got the vac lines mixed up on that one!! Clean the Idle air bypass and readjust the hard throttle stop until it idles at about 500 rpm with the Iac wires disconnected. Run 4 bottles of dedicated gas line dryer sitting for 4 months with less than a full tank building up condensation, we need to eliminate water in the gas from the equation, it causes all kinds of problems that mimic bad sensors, etc. DO NOT disconnect your TPS I bet he get's really bad gas mileage the truck is running off tables instead of actual readings, Not good!!
