I have always owned 78,79 fords and know what to look for. What do I look for on a 1995 F-150 4x4 5.0 5 sp swb has new rebuilt tranny and new clutch, new radiator?
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check for spots on the ground under that truck, it is a great indicator of general condition. Furthermore, crawl under and take a close look at everything with a flashlight to check for anything unusual, sounds like you know well enough to distinguish good things from BAD things.
If you're in the rust belt, check everything for rust. Problem spots: rear leaf spring shackles, radiator mounts, oil pan, wheel wells, cab corners.
Also keep an ear out for exhaust leaks. The stock manifolds have a tendency to warp (especially the passenger if I remember correctly).
If you do end up buying it, take it to a Ford dealer to make sure the cruise control disable switch recall has been taken care of (or gets taken care of), because it can cause an underhood fire and the whole truck could go up in flames. There are several threads here started by guys who lost their trucks because of not having this recall fixed.
Yeah the search function has been disabled by the admins for a few days because of problems with the site. If you want to search the site use google and search like this:
as previously stated, crawl underneath and look for anything unusual, look for signs of abuse, if there is rubber burned up into the wheel wells, you can bet it was hot rodded around and if there is mud caked up under the truck you can bet its been beat up. Also do look for an exhuast leak as the manifolds do tend to warp, mine did, and you will easily catch it once started, look under truck for any fluid leaks.
Jack up the front and check for play in the ball joints and tie rod ends. Oil pan gaskets are common to leak, as well as coolant seeping from the timing cover gaskets. Other than that and what was mentioned, rust and normal wear parts are about it. They're generally pretty solid reliable trucks if not abused hard their whole life. How many miles?
