E 350 Model 1991
I Just Bought An E 350 Ford Ambulance With A 7.3l Engine And E40d Transmission .it Has 26,ooo Miles On The Odometer.all The Wirings In The Engine Compartment Were Removed But I Was Able To Start The Engine .engine Runs Very Good.van Will Easily Move In Reverse But Will Have To Rev It Hard To Make It Go Forward.tranny Oil Level Is Ok And Reddish.is The Transmission In This Vehicle.electronically Wired.please Help.thanks For Any Help
The transmission commands depend on several engine electric inputs to work. If the wiring was all removed you will need to figure out what is missing. On the drivers side of the injector pump is the FIPL fuel injection pump lever position sensor, needs to be hooked up and adjusted, also the tach indicator needs to be hooked up and working.
Welcome to a great web site. You can get all the info on these trucks you will ever need right here!

If the transmission looses all electrical power, reverse will still work (though it may engage rough) but forward will feel very strange, almost like its slipping badly, because the E4OD defaults to 4th gear with both shift solenoids off.
Thanks Dave. The engine revs up and it will go forward like its slipping badly, exactly as u say.thanks for the welcome guys .This is really a great web site.
My niece in CALI will send me a repair manual from haines and i will restore all the wirings and will let u know what happens.I was just underneath the van just a while ago and i found out that the electrical plug connection to the transmission is missing too.Connections will be plugged just above the where its shifted in the transmission? .I THINK SOME GUYS CUT THE WIREs TO SELL THEM.i think and hope that the tranny is ok.The ambulance was shipped to the Philippines 1991 and it was in storage in 1992.(plates stored in the land transportation office)Thus the low mileage.THANKS VERY MUCH

One on the driver's side at the shift rod, this is the Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLPS).
Another on the driver's side but this time at the end of the speedometer cable, this is the Vehicle speed Sensor (VSS). and if the vehicle is equipped with cruise control, this will also give the speed signal for that as well.
The third connection is on the passenger side at the rear corner of the transmission pan behind a heat shield. Its actually on the top of the pan if you can picture it, since the pan flange (and valve body) is wider than the gear case of the transmission. This is the connection to the solenoids inside the transmission.
there is a plug in the shift rod and the connection is missing.plug going to it is missing.iwill find the other connections and have all the connections restored and will let u know what happens.that will be when ill we be home.am in libya right now.thanks very much dave
