Am I missing bolts in my turbo?
there are two empty bolt holes(I think)just above where the long bolts go down into the pedistal.these holes go into the wheel enclosure at the top. There is a little soot around them.
Is there a link of an exploded view of the turbo.I tried lookin but cant find.
It's kind of a common problem with these turbos. The bolts holding the turbine housing onto the center section of the turbo back out and eventually fall out. It's not a good thing at all. The soot that you see is exhaust leakage through the compromised union. There are 4 bolts total that hold the turbine housing on. if the other bolts are very loose, the turbine wheel will be allowed to contact the turbine housing and then you are looking at big bucks to fix it. I would make sure you fix it. There is a bolt kit designed JUST FOR THIS ISSUE. I used to have the Ford # but I lost it somewhere. The kit comes with the 4 bolts (and they are upgraded) necessary to re attach the turbine housing to the center section. However, getting to the bottom 2 bolts requires turbo removal.
Thanks for the reply.I will search for that bolt kit.In the meantime do you think it would be ok to put two hardened 5/16ths. bolts in its place so I can use the truck? It looks like they would be 5/16thx1.1/4"bolts.maybe ad some lock washers to that.Just untill I get the kit.
Yeah, you could probably do that and get away with it. The bolts themselves have about 3/4" of thread.
Um.....
The bolt heads on the original bolts are 5/16 (or 8mm) 12 points. You might have to go get some socket-head bolts (with the internal allen) to have a small enough contact patch on the bolt-seating surface since a standard 5/16" bolt has a 1/2" head. I am not sure if there's enough flat area on that center section to put a 1/2" headed bolt in.
Thanks for the help and links to what I need to do it rite. For now I went to the hardware store and got some hardened hex bolts.I see what you mean about the recesses bolts.Fortunately the lock washers fit rite in there antook up some recess so the hex bolt sticks out enough to ge a good bite on it with a cut off 1/2 crappy wrench. Thanks again for all the help and it will show in your feedback collum.
