You need to be turning alot of rpm for long tube headers to really perform and if you don't have the right gearing it just makes things worse until you finally get to the right rpm when they kick in.
Clearly you know what you're talking about and I commend you, but I do beleive the above claim is false. Longtubes are notorious for giving good gains in the low end, as well as the high end. Take a look at the charts above as an example. Even at 2500rpm horsepower has increased from 150 to 175, and at 3000rpm - 175 increased to 215 hp...
Fact of the matter is, longtubes give good gains all throughout the RPM range. My dyno program also has an option for shorties which results in little to no gains (I've tried it). If you want proof I'd be glad to switch over to Vista and run the program again with shorties for you. Just say the word
And by the way, the company that developed this product claims within 5% accuracy of a real dyno.
The software is upwards of $400-500, it better be damned accurate for that price. Granted, my version is pretty dated (Dyno 2000) but all of these trucks are pre-97 so the numbers haven't changed since my version was produced

Blu Beast, i would like to thank you for all of your answers, so how would i know if i have the wrong gearing for long tubes or if i have the wrong gearing for lifters? My truck is stock except for the shorty headers, exhaust and k&n intake. I will take a look at the intake, ive looked for them but have had no success at all. I will be removing the air pump when i do the underdrive kit, but i like my ac a lil to much to get rid of it. So that leaves the power steering, crankshaft, alternator water pump and thats it right? Ive considered supercharging, but thats alot of money to be putting in my truck. What kind of modifications would i need to supercharge my truck? Any suggestion for headers, or if i should even get the long tubes?
Yes you should get long tubes, you'll see incredible gains no matter what your gearing is. Speaking of which, whats your gearing?! Lol, also, whats your tire size?
Sorry for not writing sooner been real beasy, I would look into a K&N airfilter kit, they are about $180 for your truck and not the filter replacment element. It will help a little now and alot later for more power mods. Go to the Edelbrock website if you can't find the efi stuff @ summit or elsewhere and that would be my next step. As for the headers I don't know if the thorley Tri-Y's are considered long tube headers or not but Gibson Exhaust copied the design pretty much and they posted dyno numbers for your engine. If they are considered long tube headers then Scandocious would be correct. If they are not his dyno software should be checked for types of exhaust under the shorty catagory. So that is what I would do for 500 bucks, buy the K&N filter kit, and get the upper and lower intakes from edelbrock. Later the TFS heads and a roller cam along with the final answer with the exhaust. Oh and definetly the electric fan option, ditch the manual fan altogether.
sorry its taken so long to reply, been busy with work, but alright then that is what i will do. I greatly apreciate everybody's input. Thank you all! Will update once parts are installed, along with prices!
If you're looking for a simple mod that you can do yourself, I recommend throwing in a CAI and a tuner. They won't give you huge gains, but will increase performance as continue to add performance parts. You can check out some of our intakes here: http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/air-intakes/20A50096A1.aspx
thanks toughtbuiltford. I already have a whole K&N intake ordered, and i will take a look at the tuners, they seem a bit spendy though, but thanks for your input!
I'll have to differ some about the shorties giving NO gain. I'm the OO of a '92 SWB SC with the 5.0, and can say they did make a difference. They do run out at about 4000, or so I'm guessing with no tach. They seem to have made the low end (600-1500) a little worse than the stock manifolds, but then again, I have a 3.08 dif (like a car) with stock 265/70's so my truck's pretty long legged. I can feel a difference after it breaks about 1500 RPM, though. It feels stronger on acceleration than with the manifolds, but they're still dumping into a stock Y and exhaust, so I haven't reaped the full benefits of headers yet. They ARE Ford Racing shorties, but I have no idea if that makes them any different from Brand X where performance is concerned. I'm not going to have huge acceleration with a ratio like 3.08 in the pumpkin, but I'll probably catch anything out there and come stomping on by on the interstate. I do know it'll go a lot faster than I want to drive it. Other than the shorties, it's BONE stock.
