Ongoing Rough Idle Problem.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Jun-02 AT 09:26 AM (EST)]Hey all. I have a 97 ford f150 4x4 offroad 4.6 with 103 k . About a year ago I went out and started my truck in the morning. I noticed that the it had a rough idle and then the engine light came on. The rough idle stopped after a min or so but the light stayed on. I did not put much into it and unplugged the battery so the light would rested.It happened about 4 mos later and then shortly after that. Eventually it did get to the point where it did not reset itself and idled rough. I changed the pluggs the wires and the pcv valve,the only noticible thing i saw on the wires was a little hole on one. I thought that to be my problem.It worked fine after i did that.Well, today same problem. Started up and rough idle, Engine light came on. rought idle went away. So im back at square one.I pretty much try to handle any problems with the truck, I like working on it, other than trying to change the plugs again. Any help would be nice. thanks.

Ongoing Rough Idle Problem.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. YOU NEED TO GO BACK WITH OEM DOUBLE PLATNIUM PLUGS AND GOOD WIRES. BE SURE TO USE BOOT GREASE ON BOTH ENDS OF WIRES. I HAD A BAD WIRE EVEN IN THE NEW PACKAGE. THIS MADE MY PROBLEM HARDER TO DIAGNOSE. TAKE IT TO AUTOZONE AND THEY WILL RUN A SCANTOOL ON IT AND TELL WHICH PLUG. YOUR ENGINE LIGHT SHOULD HAVE BLINKED BEFORE STAYING ON. THIS CONFIRMS A MIS-FIRE. I ALSO REPLACED THE COIL PACKS AND INSTALLED A K&N FILTER. MY MILEAGE HAS GONE FROM 15 TO ALMOST 18. I ORIGINALLY INSTALLED SINGLE PLATNIUM PLUGS AT 100K. BOUGHT WIRES FROM AUTOZONE AT 120K. SWAPPED POUT ONE OF THE WIRES FOR THE BAD ONE AT 121K PPUT NEW COILS ON AT 120K. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL SINCE THEN AND THE TRUCK RUNS LIKE NEW.
