Anyone know of any recurring problems with rear ends on this truck?

not sure if it's the rearend or not, but from a stop to giving it gas, mine makes a klunk noise..I've seen a few postings on this site about the same "problem", but I'm not having ANY problems with performance...just a curious noise

My '97 4WD F150 has 150,000 miles, virtually problem-free - except for one catastrophic brake failure about three years ago.

I`ve got a `97 4x4 Off-Road w/ 103k on it and NO PROBLEMS, EVER!!!!!!
It was built in Kansas. I just recently changed the coolant and serpintine belt, the belt still looked new. Replaced the tires @ 55k w/ BF Goodrich All Terrain $100 per tire, yeah couldnt resit that deal.
They still had the little **** on them and the blue ink on the letering. Discount Tire really had a discount that day.I put on front pads @ 85k and will do the shoes this summer. Purrs like a kitten but,
its do for new plugs.
I worked 10 minutes on the first boot, passenger side and well.......I quit. Any tips?? I`ve seen the Boot Pullers from Snap-On, but wonder if those would really help, especially on the drivers side and rear of both sides.
I`d also like to add White Gauges but wonder how easy it is to reflect the mileage on the new gauge??

Yep rear end Clunk is common, but I, nor have I heard of, it actually doing anything other than making that noise. (like breaking)

To the guy with the ripped frame in four places: a frame is not a rear end.

To the guy with the plugs: yours are LONG over-due. I am on my third set. Most change theirs at 60k. Pay someone if you can find one who knows what they are doing.
The first time I went to a local garage that I trusted. One hundy, and one hour later, all done.
When I attempted to do this the second time, it took us a couple of days to get them all, and we destroyed a wire. two hundys ($50 plugs and new wires $150) and two days later, I still have four wires left in the box. There wasn't really anything wrong with the other wires anyway. Maybe if I attempt this again, I'll need more. Maybe I'll just sell them one at a time to do-it-yourselfers. LOL

Built Ford Tough Andthensometoo!

I didnt think I was LONG overdo as the manual states a change of plugs @ 100K. You might be right by spending the hundy now than adding more to it later

Thanks for the info

Are you sure it is the rear end? My 97 f150 4x4 had cluck towards the rear but it endded up being the YOKE.....it connects to the transfer case. The splines get worn and it creates slack in the system. That is why I would get a clunck when taking off.

I've had the same problem with my rearend... or so I thought. A shop replaced my rearend. clunk still happening a week later. It turned out to be the yolk. All you need to do is go to a GMC supply shop and ask for Goodwrench "special lubricant". the lube is expensive, but works. just put on your yolk. (clean first).
