I`ve asked this before, i put 460 inplace of 400 in my 79 F250 4x4 with t-18. I`ve bought 390 flywheel drilled to fit 400 clutch pressure plate. cut down collar, used inner pilot hole.bought new 400 starter but my problem now is starters just barely touch flywheel. any thoughts? Thanks.
Why not the 460 starter? I guess the blocks should be the same, but if that's the case then why not the 400 flywheel? Not sure why you went with the 390 flywheel.
I would agree I dont think the 390 flywheel is correct. Try a flywheel from a 460 that is compatible with your year engine. The flywheel must be correct depending on whether your engine is externally balanced or internally balanced. If you guess and get it wrong it will mean another teardown. I know alot of the guys on here can tell you what years were internal versus external. I cant remember what year they went to external balance. The 460 flywheel will fit just fine in a 400 bellhousing cause thats what I run on my truck

From what I have read in previous threads I believe guys are using the 390 flywheel for these swaps because the old internal balance 460 flywheels aren't available anymore as long as his 460 is 79 or older (internal balance) I think he should be fine using that flywheel.
I would go back to the parts store and ask them to pull different starters out so you can find one with a longer nose. Another thing, not all starters have the same number of teeth. I would count the number of teeth on the right 390 starter for that flywheel before just bolting one in with the right length nose.
a 400 flywheel wont even bolt to the 460 crank, the 390 one does and needs a diafram clutch to make it work rite. i cant remember what starter tho i looked threw a pile and found one that worked.the rest was history
Thanks Guys,
For the input, I`ve been busy building my garage, four car to put truck in. I`ll be back on truck soon. Thanks for everything. Rathighboy.
I went through this on a 77 460 that I swapped in a 400 4spd powered F350. I ended up getting like a early 80's m/t flywheel for a 460 then took it to a machine shop and had it balanced. Can't remember which one I used though. It took 4 different tries before one fit.
I am told the 400 starter for an auto will work, as long as I used two tin plates between the block and bellhousing. I used a 390 flywheel and clutch also. I'm gonna try the starter this weekend so then I should know for sure, or if someone was just blowing smoke up my rear lol
Thanks for the info let me know if it works out, still havn`t had time to get mine running yet but got it in the garage now and garage is finished as of last weekend, now its time to get the beast running again.
