In my frustration of not finding a decent truck within 500 miles of me, I got on ebay and searched them all. I've bid on several in the past and received second chance offers on a few, so I started putting out low bids on lots of trucks just to see what the second chance offer would be if the truck didn't sell. Well, one particular truck didn't have a reserve, but I put a low bid in anyway, without asking any questions or even very many pics. I won the truck!!!
The thing is I don't know if that's good or bad! I bid 1400, that's what I won it for. It's in PA 1000 miles away, so it will cost about 700 to have it shipped.
Let me tell you, my wife was VERY excited when I got her out of bed the show her what I did
I had been planning on buying one, and will have at least another $1000 available to put into it.
What do you guys think, did I screw up? I don't want to, but could always back out of the deal if I really had to. That's not my character, but I'd rather **** of some guy in PA than have my wife see an old broke down truck in the driveway everyday.
He says it's driven daily, hopefully it will run when it gets here!
The AC componentry has been torn out, bummer. My ol lady would kill me too, if I brought something like that home. I would get asked, how much did you pay, and how much are you going to make when you SELL IT!!. It looks like a good foundation for a nice truck, not too bad of a price for $1400, but shipping it @ $700??? What would you do if you were 17 again? ROAD TRIP!! Bus ticket, get a ride in a Geo metro at 50MPG, or jet blue, and fork out about $400 in gas to drive it home But this time have AAA towing for the last 100 miles.
It is always a gamble, but if it looks anywhere near what you see in the pictures, you will be fine. Even a half ton is hard to find for that kind of money where I am from.
Don't think you did bad at all.
I thought about driving it, but 1074.06 miles and 16 hours, 43 minutes in a truck I've never driven doesn't sound too good. I don't even know if it has an air filter. I'm hoping he took it off for the pics!?
The 700 for shipping is a general quote, they say they give an ebay discount, so I'll have to call them when they're open.
Even at 2100, worst case scenario is I get a $400 paint job and sell it. Seems like just about any running truck with a half way decent body around here will get $2500.
I'll probably have it shipped. It would cost about the same to fly out and drive it home. Of course I won't see it until it's here. I would be covered for some things through ebay though.
Looks like it may have had some rust issues--is that a piece of sheet metal that has been riveted in on the driver's side rear of the bed? Mine had the same problem except that the PO had filled it with bondo instead (I've welded a patch in now, though). Looks like maybe the front corners of the bed were rusted, too. And you've got a mismatched tailgate. So you'll probably be looking at a little body work before getting it painted. You might come out alright if you decide to sell it. Take care pulling those side mouldings off. Even if you don't want them you could probably sell them on eBay. They look like the narrow aluminum ones I have without the black strip down the middle.
The cab looks like it's in really good shape, i think you did alright. I wouldn't ship it though, i'm thinking like MasterBeavis....
I had a friend of mine buy an International Scout II Rally in MN. We flew out there, sight unseen, and bought this thing for 1200, and drove it back. It took us about 36 hours total and was the most fun road trip i've ever been on. 16 hours is not bad, just think; you'll be driving your brand new vehicle home. I bought my truck in NC i live in PA, again a really fun road trip...
Up to you man, but however you do it, i think you've done pretty good.
Wow, that reminds me of my truck when I first bought it. My bed was worse off (i let it sit untreated long enough that it's non-repairable ), rusted through cab corners, no lift, plenty of rust.. but had a rebuilt engine with working AC, redone interior, new seats, etc.
An old, unfinished project.. looks awesome. I was about to post in your other thread that you should just spend $1500 on a truck and use the rest of the money to build it up in a way that suits you. I'm doing the same with mine and I'm having a blast..
definitely a great foundation. Even has the cool trim (I'm a bit jealous) and cargo lights.
Don't get overwhelmed with the work that's going to need to be done. These trucks are easy to work on..
I feel a little better now. I guess I should say my wife does actually. But to tell the truth, she was just happy that I was spending $4000 less than I almost did.
Looks like I'm gonna have it shipped using DAS (they're in cahoots with ebay) for about $750. That's from his door to about 10 miles away from me. If it just makes it 5 miles from the pickup spot AAA will cover it from there, lol.
I'm looking forward to working on it, just hope I can find the time. I'm a plumber by day, and at night a carpenter/painter/ concrete guy/tile guy/cabinet guy/hardwood floor layer guy/mechanic/electrician/lawn boy/'whatever project my wife comes up with' guy. But this one time after we got married I did get to go fishing (she was doing something with her family) Just kidding honey, I love being married to you, thanks for letting me get an old crappy truck!
Sorry, got off track there.
One thing that does worry me a bit is the air filter. I had assumed he removed it for pics for some reason, but come to find out that is not the case. To quote "I don't have filters on any of my vehicles. When I work on them and have to take them off, I don't bother putting them back on." He does still have it, but I guess it's been off for a while.
Obviously I'll be changing fluids and be doing what is likely 'deferred' routine maintenance. Is there anything special I should do since it has been without an air filter? Could it have caused any damage?
