I just mounted my 35 inch mt's(they look bad a$$ by the way),and the first turn I made i get this crappy sound. My tires are rubbing on the radius arms. They rub right before full lock.So far from my searching I got two options
1.Adjust the steering back stop. This option would be great. If i knew how.If someone dose, please tell me.
2.Get some spacers or new rims,I ain't doing either.
I got another idea, and Im probably going to get kicked off the site but WTH.
I am considering shaving a little off the side of the radius arm.Is it posible to do this. The arm kindof looks like an I-beam and if I could just grind off that little side part where it rubs I could clear them tires.
Thanks for the help my dog and I appreciate it,of yeah its a 1977 Ford F150 4x4
Man bro, shaving the already thin radiuis arm??????
I really do not have to tell you how bad an idea this is right?
So your tire is rubbing the radius arm, so what? What is it really hurting? The arm is smooth where it is rubbing so it is not going to hurt anything. When you feel it rubbing let off the wheel a little. If you are leaning on the wheel after it starts to rub then you need to make a driver change.
The next thing you can do is run the stops out. They are located on the axle where the knuckle meets the axle tube. You should see some funny looking bolts that have a rounded head and a jamb nut. This will limit the steering radius, but not any more than the radius you have now. The real fix is a wheel with a different offset.
Just remove the trac arms so you can keep the "bad ***" tires that are too big for your truck. LOL! Hey just kidding.
Some new wheels with more back spacing is the right way, spacers, trimming, rubbing, all wrong. I don't think you'll find anyone to say "sure grind some of your trac-bars off" even though you may never have one lick of problems with it. But think of what anyone who ever pokes his head around under your truck is gonna say when they see a hack job on a critical component of your front-end.
Shoot, while yer grinding off some of the radius arm ya might as well take that grinder to the tire where its rubbing the arm also. Split the differance in the amount that ya take off of the arm with the tire and youll be in good shape.
Alright the shaving the radius arms idea is "short bus material"but I was just pitching out ideas. Its not that im worried about tire rub,I just don't want it to one day be driving down a muddy road and have to turn the whell real sharp and get the dmn tire hung up on the arm.Ill ry something though
anybody looking for some 17's
