Your results prove the cooler is doing its job so it needs a control now. Do the thermostat first. Bypassing the cooler until it warms will address much of your concerns with temp.

Spent a little time in West Texas and New Mexico myself. You should not need to run into the rad unless you are up in the mountains at Alb or further North. I did the 175/195 thermostat myself while living in the Sandia's.

Most of the time trannys can get by fine with minimal cooling. It is the extremes or work times that cause the temp trouble. Converters with more stall can get hairy quick. I had one that could take a tranny to 300 deg in less than 15 secs with a condenser as a cooler while brake torquing. Crappy converter.

i know the e4od seem to do better running cool as to what i read. Was in Ruidoso over w. end. trans. never got even warm. so i guess its doing its job....

My C6 always hovered around 190*, up to 210* while towing.

If you need a big trans cooler and don't have the money. Head to the boneyard and find a chevy sprint or other small car take the condensor coil(find the size you need)
Clean it out with some gasfirst, then carb cleaner, then some hot water and soap, then flush with water, Let it dry completely. Run some trans fluid through it make sure it is coming out pretty clean just run the same 8 oz through a few times then some fresh. Make some brackets and mount it run the lines to it either omit or run it from in rad cooler. You can make the cooler as big as you want by searching around.
