Hi everyone im a new guy to the club and to ford (the best!) trucks i have a 69 f100 custom cab with a very tired 360 and a c6 trans. I recently purchased as a whole. a '70 390 motor and c6 trans from a 70 LTD for 400.00 with 60,000 miles on it. My question is; while i am aware that it will just bolt in (UH.. it will won't it?) what about the trans will it work with my drive shaft? my drive shaft seems to be the bolt on type at the place where the shaft enters the trans could i use a f 250 shaft or what? were all the c6 trans the same as far as size and length? I would really like to use this as my trans is also very tired Thanks for all your help in advance!
if you have multiple vehicles I'd say swap engine and trans, see if the driveshaft will bolt up (would unless there is some kind of yoke difference) and then if it doesn't take it to a driveshaft shop and have them put the right end on it, they will probably also balance and paint it for you and it'll look like brand new
1971 was the last year for the 390's in the automobiles and they dropped the compression ratio to 8.6 to 1 1970 has a compression ratio of 9.6 to 1 by the way have you seen my latest post about a trade?
I wish it were, TP. That way you would have had the best engines along with the best styling (with a few exceptions) IMHO. Unfortunately, the FE lasted through 71 for Ford and 70 for Mercury (sigh).
if your original trans has a slide-yolk, it will fit. if it has a bolt-up yolk, you need to get a front driveline out of a slide-yolk truck. (cheaper and easier than having a driveline made)
use your original brackets and filter housing from your tired motor, or you will have to use a short dodge filter. (passenger car filter is vertical, the truck filter is horizontal)
I have a 1970 Mercury Montery 390 in my 1976 F-150
oh yeah you will need to swap your shift-shaft on the trans also, requiring the valve body to come out. great time for a shift kit install. be sure to use Type F in an original 1970 C-6.
and while its out install new (brass) freezeplugs....
