My 07 6.0 Liter CC has an exhaust drone/ hum/ harmonic at 1500 rpm which is very annoying. It only comes in at that rpm and sounds as if the exhaust system is resonating. Anyone else experience this problem and any fix? Neither my 05 or 2000 had this sound.
I had to put a resonator on my exhaust to kill the drone. It worked but my wife still thought it was too loud so I ended up putting a different muffler on it also. What size exhaust do you have? and is it factory, aftermarket??
i had a drone like sound at 1500 rpms as well but only after i put on a car delete pipe and it was the rubbing of the metal piece that goes through the rubber bushing rubbing on the C frame of the truck
Thanks for the replies. I have the stock exhaust. The exhaust volume in general is OK It is right at 1500 rpm when the drone comes in and then it goes away as it approaches 1800 rpm. It is a "tinny" sound like a badly tuned musical instrument.
I don't know Scott,,, I've been driving my 07' 6.0L since April and I haven't experienced the drone you're describing,, but maybe it's so much quieter than my 97' 7.3 that I just don't notice it.
I'll be listening for it at 1500 though and get back to you if I hear anything.
I was really considering a MBRP 5" exhaust but I'm really concerned about cabin noise that I don't want unless I really jump on the throttle.
my '97 was terrible with aftermarket exhaust and even changed mufflers to help some. read somwhere else that trying a good quality flex pipe at front of the horizontal part of your exhaust may help. I want to upgrade my '03 7.3 but don't want the drone either.
My 07 cc 6.0 has an annoying harmonic at a certain speed that is almost like a honking vibration that repeats. it sounds like it is coming from under the hood. if i speed up or slow down it goes away. where does your sound seem like it is coming from? i will check at what rpm mine is happening at.
check the heat sheilds on the exhaust. my 5.4 had a similar problem and one of te welds broke on the heat shield. Its an easy fix you could reweld it if you have a welder. or put a C-clamp on it... hope this helps
Sometimes the sound seems under the hood, sometimes under the cab. It could be described as a honking vibration. If you are passing through the rpm it goes away quicly.
My 04 does it too, same rpm. drove it with the dealer and he said that was normal. the early 04 and 03s had a replacement turbo bracket that was to address that. but my truck was built after the replacement date.
take your dealer for a drive and get their opinion (I trust my service guy, make sure you do yours)
Well, now that I've been listening for it,, I do hear a low note exhaust droan.
There's a range of about 1500 to 1750 rpm where you can hear it....(that was about 55 to 60 mph range)..... and it seems to get worse if you come up a slight raise in grade and the engine has to labor just a bit harder.
But it's not bad..... you have to turn the radio off to hear it.
It's not a big deal for me because I just don't drive in that speed range very often and if I do it's not for long.
"I can't drive 55"
I'm a 70mph guy !
I wonder if an undercoating would help or some other form of insulation.
I checked the rpms and it happens around 1600. I'm sure its not a mechanical problem but just some weird harmonic frequency thing. Its not real loud but with the radio off its easy to hear. I have had problems with broken/rusted heat shields before but this is definately different and happenning on pretty much new trucks. I sometimes wonder if the wind at that speed is causing something to vibrate. but it is not a steady vibrating sound mine goes up and down at steady rate like a bellows or something.
Thanks skippyp and all for the reply's. My 05 did not due this and the turbo bracket seems a real possibility. I do seem to hear it under the hood and times and sometimes more from the exhaust. Turbo bracket would fit that bill. I will check with the service guys.
Somewhere in the 6.0 library there is a TSB for exhaust droan. It made me nuts to the point I traded the truck for an '08.
As I recall it is caused by a difference in diameter in the pipes just past the turbo. The clearance between them isn't enough to allow the inner and outer pipes to keep away from one another, producing the droan.
It is a bit like water torture because it is low enough on the harmonic scale that you can't hide it with music.....
