Help a brother out.... literally

Hey all,
Sorry, I didn't know what to name this topic.

My brother has an 03 PSD 6.0 F250. He recently took the cat off and put an air filter on (i forget the name, afr, ari or something), it's just the air filter. He said he had to pull out some air box piece to put this filter in and it fits in the original air box.
So he did the cat and filter.

He asked me to post this question for him to see if anyone had an answer or knowledge about gas milage.

He says that his in town gas milage has dropped since he has done the cat and filter. Power is up, but town milage is down to about 11 mpg or so he says.

He was wondering if this could hurt anything like air/fuel ratio or what-not.
I told him that he probably needs to put a tuner chip in it now, but I can't say for sure until I research the subject of what he did.

What should he do? Chip it? Which brand?

I appreciate any help.

just changing the air filter and removing the cat will not cause a decrease in fuel mileage. Those two mods should show a slight decrease in egt though. Now that your brother thinks the truck is more fun to drive and it feels like it has more power....i'm sure he in the pedal a lot more **hint hint** thus causing the lower mpg.

and you didn't mention what the mpg is down from?

Oops, sorry. He said it's only down a mpg or 2.

He may be stepping on it more to make that turbo sing too. Just needed to ask so he can sleep at night knowing that his mods aren't going to hurt the engine.

What chip tuner is good for him?
He doesn't want mega hp, just a small increase, trans tuning ability, and of course, the best gas milage tuner out there.
I'm clueless about what chip to suggest for a 6.0

any tips?

Since he has an 03 6.0 installing the A/M air intake is causing the fuel mileage drop. The 06E17 strategy on the 03 turns off the EBP sensor and instead uses the MAF sensor to control fueling and turbo. The A/M air intake is causing problems with the MAF readings and so the ECM is trying to compensate for this and it is effecting the fuel mileage. Also removing the Cat and installing an A/M air intake will do nothing to improve the egnine performance. Best thing he can do is re-install the OEM Donaldson Air intake. The OEM Donaldson unit has the best filtration of any filter on the market, holds over 8lbs of dirt and will supply more air than the engine can use until you get to 500+ RWHP.

If he wants to install a tuner then the tuner of choice is the SCT XcalIII with Custom Tunes from Matt at Spartan diesel or Eric at Innovative.

So have your brother re-install the OEM Donaldson filter, and the Cat is up to him as they produce very little restriction (about 1Hp change). If your brother adds a tuner he needs to also add gauges, EGT, Trans Temp, Boost and Fuel Pressure.

the favorite around here is the SCT with custom tunes. I along with many others use Spartan Diesel. I've never had a complaint with the unit or the service from Matt and Evan. http://www.spartandieseltech.com/

I can guarantee that the mileage will go through some ups and downs again after the tuner. Your brother will not know what to do with all of his new found power. I run a pretty hot tune (ultra comp) as my daily driver and still get 15 mpg with mainly in town driving.

black hat is on the money with this one.. every single word.

as far as the cat, he will want to put it back on if he's not going to get the SCT, it is probably hurting him with the stock programming.

the best thing he can do is call evan or matt at spartan diesel and get the SCT.
matt gets about 300 emails a day, i am not joking, so if he is slow to respond please dont get upset, he is a very very busy guy..

if you cant get a hold of him , try evan, the guy is super knowledgable and has written several tunes for me.

he is efoster somethin or other on these forums...
