Pulling to left when braking

I seem to have an irratating problem with my 84 ford f150 2wd. When braking, the truck wants to pull to the left, and I need to compensate with the steering wheel to continue going straight. Therefore when I stop braking, the vehicle pulls back to the right.

When I got the truck, I replaced both front calpiers with rebuilds from NAPA,as the truck was previously was sitting for awhile, and both frontcalpiers were frozen. I also put on new pads.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Maybe an alignment issue?

Thanks, Rob

You might have to bleed the system again to remove all air that could be a problem.

Duncan10,

I tried that today, Bled both sided for awhile and no air observed. So I filled up the reservoir again, went for test ride, and same problem!!!! Has anyone had a bad experience with NAPA rebuilds? They are authenic FORD calipers, just rebuilt.

Don't know much on the subject but could it be an expanding rubber brake hose? I would think if the hose is bulging under pressure then that caliper wouldn't squeeze as hard. Maybe worn wheel bearings? Like I said don't know much about it but figured try to help give some ideas. I have used NAPA rebuilds before and found them to be really good quality. Never had a problem with one.

Check your tie rod ends and make sure they don't have any play in them. Sometimes that will let one tire toe in or out a bit when braking.

Also, take the calipers off and sand the brackets they slide in with purple or grey scotchbrite or some emory cloth and lightly grease with a dab of wheel bearing grease. You may have a caliper (on the right) dragging and not pressing the outboard pad against the rotor.

Are you getting the same amount and pressure of fluid out of both bleeders when you bleed them? I would also check your radius bushings under the door area on the frame which holds the frontend in position.

Hey, my buddy took a look at my front end and said my right radius arm bushing is shot and has alot of play.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of job it is to replact the bushings?

Thanks, Rob

First things first. Get the bushing replaced as it will affect caster which will cause a pull. They are a definite learning experience the first time around. My first thought though, was a bad right brake hose before you mentioned the bad bushing.

OK, I replaced both bushings today. Drivers side took 3 hours, Pass side took 2 hours. Probably because I discovered that the air chisel is second to none!!!

The big problem I had on the Pass side is the CATS were so close to the frame, made it difficult to get nuts tightened.

Now front end feels nice and tight, braking is improved also, no more pulling left and the mystery clunk noise when lightly tapping the brakes.

Thanks to everyone who helped. Project was a breeze!!!
