So I bought this 1990 F250 with a 5.8 and auto. It will idle, but if you give it any gas it either will die out or be close to it.
I've changed numerous things including the plugs, and after running it for a bit with the new plugs I pulled some and they are black. Its running extremely rich, smells up my cloths and garage even with the door open.
It has an aftermarket open element air filter which seems to be sucking alot of air. Sounds noisier than it should.
Stop!! Before you go throwing random parts at the thing, do a little more diagnosis. Is the exhaust system plugged? What is the fuel pressure? What is the compression on all cylinders? Are there any codes stored in the computer?
Ok, already changed the TPS, and according to the previous owner he changed the exhaust including a new cat. Fuel pressure is good and I'll check the ECT, codes, and do a compression test tonight if I have time.
i dont know if this will help.. but when we set the timing on my truck.. when it was.. 0 DC ** it maked a loud sucking noise and wouldnt not rev... it will cut of... so chek the timing of the other things dont work.. the stock timing should be at 10 BTDC**
I Have The 88 F250 4x4 460 Auto.had The Same Problem, started Pricing Different Parts,i Said Ill Run It Till Its Dead.got To Looking, map Sensor Was Leaking, hollowed Out My (cat) Put A New Cooling Sensor On It,plugs An Wires,no More Problems.not Saying This Will Work For You,but Study Up On Your Sensors, they Play A Big Part.im Going On 300,000 Miles An This Was The First Real Problem Ive Had.
When I first got this truck I figured it was the ICM so I put a new one in. When that didn't fix it I read about the PIP, so I swapped out the distributer with one from the wrecker. Still didn't fix it so I put the original back in.
Tonight I tested the PIP and spuot connector and they both checked out.
Tried a PCM from the wreckers, no luck. I've changed the MAP sensor, plugs, wires, rotor and cap.
I can't get the rpm's over 1300 without it dying out. If I try and start it when its hot, it just runs for a few seconds the dies.
do you have a pump on the frame rail of this thing ? Like under the drivers door ...... it might be shot . If so you have the high and low pressure pumps . One in the tank is low pressure ... it job is to get fuel the the high press pump on the frame .
If you Dont have the one on the rail .... you have only one in the tank ... and its high pressure only . Its possibly shot .
And .... take the vacuum line off the regulator on the fuel line . See if theres gas in the vacuum line . Suck on it tells you right away . Taste gas ? ? If so , the regulator is leaking and dumping fuel into the vac lines , sucking into the intake .... whaalaa .... rich like hell . Replace reg .
As for all the codes .... if anyone has disconnected anything in the past while it was running ... it will have those codes . Just because it has a code dont mean that part is bad .
For instance .... lets say you get a 02 rich code . Oxygen sensors bad right ? NOPE .
You could have a bad fuel reg . Hows the puter gonna diag a bad reg ? It cant . All it knows is .... hey theres alot of gas here and the 02 is Really pissed off about it .

Just curious Paul...would all of the above issues you mentioned always throw codes? or could these problems exist without registering on the computer?

Neither of these things will throw a code, but the motor will be a dog if it can't move air or is compromised mechanically. Vacuum and gasket leaks will also cause major headaches without showing up on diagnostics.
Hey musclestang, when you say that codes can be there from when someone disconnected them while it was running blahblah... you can clear em' by resetting the computer correct?
