What makes the speedo work?

It goes through computer and it even logs it, I know in the newer vehicles it logs a kinds of info, that can later be used in court, for a or against you if you were in a bad car accident. If you speedometer doesn't work now it's probably your VSS (vehicle speed sensor). It's located on top of your rear differential. There is a line going into form the cab of the truck.

The main thing wrong with mine? it used to be a gasser, now it's going to be an all mechanical IH diesel. The old owner was calling, asking if he could have the ECM. I thought the speedo/cruise got sent thru the ECM.
