ATC Crazy and Looney's methode is right on. One more helpful hint is to remove the oil plug first before you start draining the diff. If for some reason the plug cannot be removed and you have already drained the differential, you're in for more headachs.
so i went to O'reilly Auto parts today and he said they did not carry my gasket alls he had was like a rebuild gasket kit...or sumthin like that, he told me to go to FORD for the gasket! so i may go there or try AutoZone. ugghhh
And he also said it required 5 pints for the differential. Does this sound correct?

A gasket for the rear diff cover? You don't need one. Just get a tube of RTV and lay a thick coat of it on the mating surfaces. Clean the mating surfaces off real good with some brake cleaner and emory cloth first...
And yeah...the book says 5.7 pints for the rear end. I put in exactly 3 quarts and the 4oz bottle of friction modifer for my LS.
i just changed mine yesterday, used 2 and 3/4 quarts. amsoil 75-140 14 dollars a quart. and the ford modifier. i also found out why 8.8 ls rears will not take my driving. spiders are not looking good and lot of play in them. so i said F that run it till she stops and them put new in.
