Noisy PUmp

I've searched previous posts however i don't know what the part is called so i can't find the info i need.

Anywas, on my 03 F350 Powerstroke 6.0, i noticed today on the highway that it didn't have much power and didn't seem to want to boost fully. When i came to the stoplight, it idled extremely rough, almost stalling. I rev'd it up and managed to get it to idle decently, when i noticed a whinining noise. When i got home i left it running and got out and noticed that it was coming from the box on the frame rail under the drivers seat. I turned of the engine and then turned the key to the Run position, and i could hear clearly that it was that unit or pump making the noise, much louder than normally. Question is, is this part expensive, or is it repairable, and do they do this for a bit before they go or will i have to replace it right away?

i just rolled 162k, just over my drivetrain warranty.

that is your HFCM horizontal fuel conditioning module.. it is your fuel pump, your primary fuel filter, your fuel heater (when necessary) and the water separator. i'm not so sure it's rebuildable, or how much it costs, but i doubt it is cheap. you may have to end up buying one anyway, and if that is the case, it couldn't hurt to open it up and see if you clean it out.. if that helps or not i couldn't say.

Is this a common to go on these? Could it just be a bad filter causing this?

first thing i would do is change your fuel filters and drain the water separator.. look at the tech files if you need info on how to do this.. and then see if it helps...

i have not heard of this being a common problem, as a matter of fact this is the first time i've heard of a problem with one at all..

Normally before startup it should turn on for 5 seconds or so then stop, correct? Well it was doing that fine, then it would keep going and make a terrible noise non stop, I just drained the water seperator, and it doesn't seem to be doing it anymore. I'll order a couple of fuel filtes and keep an eye on it, hopefully it was just the water but i'm terrified that the pump could be toast

We have an '03 that was whining at idle. Took it in and drained the water separator and put new fuel filters on and it's been fine since then. Dad drove it several miles before they got it into the shop. I would say that was at least 15,000 miles ago and he has had no more trouble. I would say you are good to go!

Well, on my way to work today, i had some serious issues. All was well, i got up to highway speed, approx 120km/h, and steped on it to pass another car, after that, it started losing power and i couldn't go over 80, by the time i got to work there were spots that the truck wouldn't go over 40km/h. When i came to a stop, it stalled, once i got it started when i revved it up in neutral, blue smoke was pouring out of the tailpipe. I got the wife to drop off new fuel filters and changed them at work, it still ran poorly for the first half of the drive home, with similar symptoms to those of the morning. I still hear the whining noise, however i don't think it's coming from that pump anymore, the best i can describe it is that it almost sounds like a Power steering pump. I've got a buddy with a programmer, who is going to read my codes for me tomorrow, although the CEL never came on. IF anyone has any ideas, i'd like to know what i'm in for before i go to the dealer for an out of warranty repair.

pump is bad. HCFM and change it quick-under and hr on the ground but messy w/ the fuel and then make sure to blead the seconday filter housing after replacing both filters and o-rings. it will fail soon!!! I think around 3-$400

I just hooked up my buddies bullydog and the only code i get is P0603 , which is apparently Internal Control Module (KAM) keep alive memory. Getting underneath it again, after turning the key to the Run position, it sounds fine for a second, then it makes a terrible noise. I'm almost postive it's the pump, which is strange if they are rare to let go as i've already replaced one under warranty. Is there a good place online to buy them?

I had the same problem. Mine was was giving an electronic feedback, similar to an alternator whine (I could tell this by trying to put an electric window up when it was already up...and could hear the whine 'drag down').

This had actually been occuring for quite a while before I started having noticeable performance issues. I paid to have the filters changed when I first noticed performance problems (while on vacation), but yet a month later, I had 2 injectors go out. Still had problems after that, so after a little prodding by me, they found the fuel pump to be bad. After replacing the fuel pump, they test drove it and said it helped tremendously, but still wasn't quite up to par, so they checked the fuel filters. They found that the first Ford dealership had actually only changed one of the filters. After replacing them, my girl was back to normal.

I'm still convinced that the clogged filters led to the injector failures as well as the fuel pump failure. They actually replaced my pump under the 5yr/100,000 mile powerstroke warranty.......and according to what I've read in my warranty info, the fuel pump is specifically excluded from that warranty....but I wasn't about to complain.

I'm going to be a bit more religous about changing my filters from here on out....chalk up up to first diesel ownership.

Good luck with yours.

My first pump was also included under my 160k powertrain warranty, if this solves the issue, i will be changing my fuel filters every time i change my oil. This is also my first diesel.
