I got a 1993 F150 (see sig). Im looking at an upgrade motor wise. Im looking at either going 302 or 351W. I would prefer the 351 but fuel prices are telling me 302. I realize the 302 is as tourqey (is that a word) as the 300 but heres my defensive point, it is so much easier to get more horsepower and tourqe out of them cheaper to. My truck currently has a 5 speed manual and 4 wheel drive. I want to keep both. Its also EFI, not sure if that matters.
So i guess my question is, what all would be required to do it if it can be done (which I know it can). Let the discussion and assistance begin. Thanks in advance.
you will gain nothing going 5.0 over the 300-6. install a header and cam in that 300 and you will be in good shape otherwise the 5.8 would be the better shot. mpg between the 302 vs 351w is minimal. in my full size bronco the 5.8 has gotten better mileage then my 302 originally did.
honestly i would rather have the 300-6 being gas is not getting cheaper and its such a reliable motor. its not hard to get 300k miles out of that motor.
i agree with these guys, but if you wanted to do this i assume your going to stay with fuel injection, either way you will need a new computer, im not sure of engine wiring but you may need to check on it, as far as thetranny and transfer case is concerned, it will work with all the 300s, and small block fords 302 and 351s
As much as I love my 302 in my 96, I would never replace the 300 in my 82 with one. The 300 is a much better truck engine.
I'm in the opposite boat, my 96 F150 came with a 302 from the factory, not that theres anything wrong with that. But if my 302 were to crap out I'd replace it with a 300.
Definately going for the 351W. It probably won't happen until after winter. So far I have found a couple. I figure ill get one and go through it this winter and figure out exactly what I gotta do, then do it in the spring.
i would go efi for sure. better mpg, reliability etc.. plus all the hard stuff is done like electric fuel pump return lines that sort of thing. go on ebay and pick up an efi 5.8 upper/lower intake. throttle body and get a 5.8 distributor for that year and a 5.8 harness and ecu. honestly it wont be hard and be way benificial
