Pffft...Pffft.... Pffft. I get that sound at 2700 RPM just before a shift from 5 to 6th gear. It will pfffft 6 or 8 times then shift. F250 SC4X4, 2002.
The noise isn't there any other time just under light load (modest acceleration up hill) sometimes and its 6 or so pfffft's them it shifts and goes away.
It is pretty repeatable.
My guesses:, exhaust but the pfft pffft pulsing sound is at about 4Hz. Each cylinder is firing at 22.5 Hz. If it one cylinder leaking it is noly doing it 1 in 5 times, everytime.
Spark plug leak... same reasoning.
No exhaust leaks noticeable. ( just replaced the passenger exhaust manifold gasket. It is tight and quiet)
Sounds similar to the small bell housing cover rattling or possibly a rock shield near the Y pipe? I've had issues with both and have managed to get those under control (double sided tape on the cover and hose clamps on the exhaust shields), only to discover another weird squeaking...
I'll have a look at the Y. I went to the FORD dealership and asked about it today. I got elevated shoulders. It sound like compressed gas which is why I zoomed in on the exhaust.... I'll look at the Y.
If you hold it in first on that hill, are you able to replicate the noise? It still sounds like that annoying little cover to me. I've had to mess with mine 4 or 5 times now, I'll fix it and then about 8 months later, it'll start back up again (fffft ffffft noise around 1800-2000 rpm). It's just too darn cold out right now to be messin' with the truck so I'll just have to turn the radio up in the meantime.
