I am trying to decide what to use for a muffler (if any at all) on my 84 F150. I am rounding the corner of having a rolling chassis again as soon as my 6" lift springs and bushing kit come in. Once I get the axles back under the truck I plan to drop the motor/trans/xcase in before installing the cab... this way I can run all my brake, fuel, and exhaust easier too. I am running a Hedman header and plan on building a Y-pipe to connect the collectors and running a single 3" exhaust. I am after that old cummins tractor sound, I can't decide whether to just straight pipe it, run like a 30" glasspack or what. Any suggestions?
Well, I thought the glass packs would sound about as loud as a straight pipe, since they are straight through. Also some mufflers (I think Magnaflow) are straight through with glass packing too. But I read the glass packing acts like 1000s of tiny holes that absorb the higher frequencies resulting in a lower tone at the tailpipe and if so, that is desireable to avoid any hint of a high pitched sound that could cause anyone to even think about ricer cars when they hear your truck.
I just put a 2.5" medium length Powerstick chambered pipe muffler on my Bronco. It's a straight through design like a glasspack without the glass. Sounds much more like a tractor than the glasspack I took off. I like it.

+1 for glass packs not enough people use them any more. I like pissing off them honda racer boy cars when I open her up and they can't hear their car!!
Ask and ye shall receive. 300 with EFI manifolds, Offy C, Edelbrock 500 cfm, and a 2.5" chambered pipe muffler. I bet it would sound even better in a cammed engine...

Yeah that sounds nice, I wonder what it would sound like with 3" pipe and a 4" tip. Mine would probably be a tad louder because I am running a header, but it would sound pretty close to that I think. I am running a mild cam in my 300 so I bet it would sound pretty mean. Thanx!
is the truck your going to put your exhaust on carb'ed or EFI? If its EFI you wont be able to get that cummins tractor sound. I wanna hear an EFI with a glasspack

Nope it's an 84 carbed motor, I have it poked .040 over, mild cam, Offy intake, and a header. It sounded mean at idle with my old exhaust setup: dual collector header into 2.5" single, 2.25 dual out Flowmaster 40. I want to get rid of the duals...times and fads change. One bank of cylinders only needs one pipe.
grab a glass pack and a heating torch heat up the glass pack to about what it would be at normall operating temps of vehicle and then get water on the inside og it makes the fiber glass go solid so u get a real deep full sound
I wish I could find a way to get a sound clip of my truck. It is a 96, and I cut off the second cat and ran 3" pipe back past the cab and put a turndown on it. It sounds unique for sure, and you'd probably be surprised because in my opinion it does sound kind of like a tractor. I know it sounds WAY meaner than when I just had a gutted cat and a glasspack.
I thought you may be interested in listening to this Ford Falcon. I belive he is using Hooker headers and flowmasters, not sure on the series though. This is one of the better straight sixes that I have heard, enjoy.
