Hello all. I'm new to the Forum, but I just bought my first Ford a year ago. It's an 06 Expedition XLT 5.4L and I love. However, it just started acting strange Friday. The starter went out on it and I spent all day yesterday replacing it and the spark plugs. It tried to start. We gave it a jump start and it finally started. Then we turned it off to replace the plugs and tried to start it again. It wanted to turn over, but it wouldn't catch, then we heard a sort of, "clunking, " noise and then nothing. You can hear the starter motor spinning, but it's not engaging. I took it off and took it back to the store for testing and it tested fine, as well as my battery, but when I install it back in my truck I still get the same thing. The motor spins, but that's about it. Can anyone tell me what I might be missing here? Could I have beat the odds and just got a bad starter from the store? We're stumped here.
you say that the starter motor is spinning, but not engaging. but you say it is turning the motor over. if the starter is not pushing the gear out, it is not hitting the flywheel and spinning it. are you sure they gave you the correct starter that bolts up properly and would not stop it from fully engaging. also, are you getting a spark from the plug? just two easy checks to start at. let me know
Sorry to confuse. The very first time I put the new part in I was able to get it to turn over with jumper cables. We shut it off to replace the plugs, then tried to start it again. That's when we heard the clunking noise and could only hear the spinning of the start motor from that point. I verified the part with other sources and it appears to be the correct part. I'm pretty sure about the spark too.
there is a good chance the part is bad, take the starter to auto zone, and have them test it again and again. because i had that problem, i got a brand new starter, installed it, worked fine for a week, then went bad, took it to the store, had it tested, and it was good, so i had them keep doing it, and it failed after about the third test..... cheap auto zone crap. if that is not it, maybe you are not getting enough power to fully engage the starter.
Actually that's close. I got this one from Advance. They are bringing me in a new one today to replace it with. I did take it to them yesterday, along with my battery (while I was taking things out) and they both tested o.k. But they only tested the starter a couple of times. I might have them test the new one I get tonight multiple times before leaving the store. Just as a guess we switched my battery with my brothers from an F-150 and get the same results. My battery in his truck actually starts it better than his 1 yr. old battery did. Volt meter on my battery tested at 12.5 volts.
sounds like a bad starter. did you try beating the starter with a hammer or something to un-bind the starter just to see if it would knock loose, and let it fully engage? if you have power, spark and fuel to the motor, then you should be able to get it to turn over with a good starter. also, make sure all the wires to and from the starter are tight, and have a good connection. I assume you are buying the whole unit (starter & solenoid) all in one? double check all connections because they are really poorly manufactured/rebuilt parts
Got it!!!! I just had them replace the unit they sold me and voila. Have a different problem now, but I'll post that as a new topic. It will at least turn over now. I'll know where not to buy my starters next time. Thanks for your quick responses.
Well that sucks. We only put about 10k on ours a year so that is why I was thinking warranty. Did you check on the price of one at Ford or NAPA vs. the ones that you can get from Autozone, etc.?
I wish I got the extended warranty now, but mine expired before I could and as far as I know you can't purchase one from Ford once the factory one expires. I love my truck, and as a result drive it everywhere. To my disadvantage on this particular instance. I live in a small town, so Advance was about the only option considering the time constraints I was under.
