One more thiought, I compared the F-150, Titan, Dodge 1500, Silverado and Tundra before I bought my F-150. The F150 has one of, if not the longest stopping distance of all of them. They definitely need to do some work in this area.
I had a 2001 Mustang GT and come time for brakes I installed a set of cross drilled rotors and semi-metallic pads. Wow! What a difference that made. Stopped right now! The braking was not as smooth mind you, you can feel the holes in the rotors, but it made a big difference. There's a lot of information on this subject out there at just the touch of your enter key. I research the crap out of what-ever it is I'm thinking about doing and then make a decision based on what I find out. Have fun doing it too!
Don't know what to tell you there, except that unless you have data to show that what your saying is true, then you're only guessing. My wife has a '91 Jeep Cherokee that has anti lock brakes and it never feels like it's going to stop in time, but you know what, it does. You may be misjudging your braking distances, learn your vehicle and adjust your driving habits accordingly.
On the other hand if you think that there is a problem it would then be very important to get it to the dealer and have them check it out.
Well, I don't have any instrumented tests to show braking distances, but since I have driven the same roads with many different vehicles, I can comment on the relative braking of one vs. the others. I AM misjudging the distances with this truck as it stops like s@#t! But my concern is an emergency. I love this truck, but the brakes on this particular one are not right, worse than any pickup or SUV I've owned, which is a few. In fact, this doesn't stop a whole lot better than my 7700 did with 2700 lbs. on it, and the brake feel is much worse. We'll see what the dealer says, too bad it's a 120 mile trip each way. That's why I like to have any available info before I go in.
Check out Edmunds.com. There you can get specs, TSB's, customer ratings and professional ratings. Other than here I haven't heard of any brake problems with the newer F-150's. It may be a matter of air in your system, but then one would think that you would have a check brake system light on. Good luck in you efforts.
I've been searching for F-150 brake problems for you and most Ford owners are extrmemly happy with their trucks, I have found a few sites that purport the exact opposite. Check out www.LemonAuto.com...I didn't see anything there but you can contact them. I've been typing "2004 Ford F150 brake problem" into my search window and coming up with lots of results. I tried 2007 and came up with next to nothing.
It sounds to me like the first reply to this thread may have the right answer. I would contact the dealer and make sure they understand that you have a serious concern and that it is a huge inconvenience for you to bring it back to them. If you get no satisfaction be sure to contact the Customer Service Manager, in fact I think I'd start there.
While you're at the dealership, you might as well test drive a couple of other F-150's and see what the brakes are like. My truck seems to stop just fine, the pedal is soft when I'm stopped though. I do need to go to a remote area and check them out under hard stopping conditions. It's a good idea to do this anyway, that way I know how my truck is going to react under emergency conditions.
Just had had to spend $550.00 on new brakes for my '04. The backs just needed pads, the second set in 62,000 miles, and the fronts needed the calipers rebuilt. The Pistons in the calipers became oval from heat and they basically had the truck semi braking no matter if I was braking or not. There is actually plastic pieces inside the F150 brake pistons...I could not believe that when I heard it. Anyway I love my F150 but the '04s definitely have their issues. Three weeks ago I had to have my rear axle seals replaced as well.
So in total I've had the motor on the passenger window replaced, the drive side mirror replaced because the motor went out in that, the rear axle seal, the brakes twice and one tie rod end. Now the auto sliding rear window jsut stopped working so now I have to do that. You would figure with all of that BS I would hate my truck but I don't I still love it and wouldn't drive any other brand.
Thanks ech0sh4y! If I pulled into my fathers drive way with anythign but a Ford I would be disowned hahaha. I guess all that Ford hype in th ehouse as a kid wore off on me!
I recently put Ceramic brake pads on 07' screw, afterwards noticed pedal soft as in other posts, stopped truck on hill [driveway] turned eng. off let it start rolling and pumped brake pedal many times. After lot of stopping did it again, now have full pedal and excellant brakes. Also got 2600 miles on truck.
moonlighter,,,,i wonder what that did to help your situation? looks like that could possibly damage the booster? i might just try that. Im ready to try anything. paul....05 scab
Many years ago to bleed brakes on vehicle w/power brakes, you pumped pedal up with eng. off, without help of booster. They were a lot easier to bleed. It won't damage Booster, the pedal is harder to push is all, I don't know what it did on mine but it has almost full pedal of brakes.
Recently I test drove an 07 F150 SCAB with the heavy duty payload package and noticed the same brake problem you describe. I don't think it's your imagination. At first, I thought that maybe my engine stalled when I approached the light. My 00 F350 CC stopped better than that truck.
