91 2WD 3.0/5spd 267K+...I recently replaced t/stat as it was for the longest time not getting up to normal temp range...right before I did though after I brought it out of a year long hibernation, It decided it wanted to peg hot...replaced the t/stat...no problems since...been a couple of months, fair amout of freeway driving with no problems...I took a long haul...300 miles...to the north into BC Canada to get someparts for my 65 and all was oik till I wanted to leave...noticed temp gauge wasnt budging...heater cranked heat fine and all...checked rad. out...top hot like you would expect, bottom cold/cooler significantly...I didnt pop the cap off as it was up to temp and didnt want a scalding bath...felt core...lower part by rad inlet cool. ...was this way all the way home ...mostly home anyway as Im not quite home now...I poped wire off of the front facing temp sending unit...gauge pegged cold to max..popped back on, went to cold...up maybe an 1/8 of an inch...was the same all the way home...had heat maxxed out, no milkshake, no leaks...what you guys think ???
Could be corrosion around temp sensor, unscrew it and screw it back in!!! They are just a thermisistor and they can wear out or lose some of their ability!
K...thats what I am leaning to to start with...has anyone encountered or know of anyone thats had plugged radiators on these since they are crossflow setup ?? Im 2nd owner and radiator to the best of my knowlege has never been serviced...original hoses, etc...also, did the lower hoses on these originally have the spring in them ???
Update...havent replaced anything as Ive been working on my 65...got fuel p/u issues on it...i drove this one though last night...gauge didnt budge at all...I got another gauge sending unit...hard to go wrong for 6 bucks and change...question....have any of you who have replaced this or parts that are brass/aluminum mating surfaces...have you used either anti seize on the threads or teflon tape on the threads ???? This is the unit thats right below the t/stat neck pointing straight at you as you are facing the engine.

Thanks, cs65
Permatex makes a "Sensor/sending unit-safe" thread sealant. Thats what I had to use to replace my temp sending units on my (old)'99 and '90 Ranger
update...I replaced the unit...works like it should...when I pulled the old one out though...the insulator stuff...plastic or whatever it was around the plug in terminal itself, was all white and powdery...I touched it and it was like dust...it crumbled in my fingers...was it originally a white insulator material or black like the replacement...just curious as Ive never seen this kinda stuff happen on any kind of sending unit...
