I have a 79' F-150 2wd 460 and need advice on the steering box. It needs replacing from leaks and slack after 25 years and wonder if anybody upgraded their box to a AGR Performance brand? http://www.agrperformance.com/products.php?cat=101 It states it has a different gear ratio and proprietary gear components and etc. Being that I have 2wd and will stay with 15" tires for now, is it a good choose to spend a few extra dollars to go upgrade of sorts? They also recommend their more powerful power steering pump to go along with the gearbox. Please comment.
I can't remember but I believe they aren't much more expensive than a rebuilt box. I looked at them once then got a good price from CarQuest for one. I believe you can buy those boxes from Jegs & Summit for a good price. Go for it. If I ever replace mine again I will most likely go that route.
I see on Summit and the AGR web page they only go back to 1980 year models. Will need to call for the 79 application. A stock rebuild is about $170.00 (NAPA) and the AGR runs about $289.00 if you can find one that year at Summit or other catalogs but what worries me is that AGR doesn't advertise the earlier model years. A phone call will clear it up.
