I'm about to order an 08 and I'm trying to decide if I want to add the 20' tires.
My question is what will be the net effect on my rear axle ratio. This is important to me since I will be using the truck to tow my boat. I was planning to order the 4:10 gears.
If I were you, I would get the lowest available gearing you can get. Towing will be easier on the transmission, the truck won't feel like a dog, and you will even get better mileage because the engine doesnt have to work as hard. I would vote for 4.30's at least...
When the factory determines towing ratings for a truck, they take tire size into account. You don't have to worry about it. Just make sure the truck you purchase can tow the boat you have and it's all good.
Are you ordering a single rear wheel vehicle or dual rear wheels (dually)? Will it be an F250, F350 or F450? Your choices are limited based on the truck you order, however, if you're sticking with stock wheels and tires it shouldn't be a problem whatever you get. It'll likely tow the boat fine.
I'm considering buying a 2003 f250 Lariat CC V10 4x4 with 3.73 gears. I think I'm getting a pretty good deal with 98K miles for $13500 in real good condition. My intention is to tow about a 8-10K lb fith wheel (yet to be found). The truck has got 35" almost brand new tires. This is clearly a suboptimal TV setup but will it be functional? How much difference would swapping out tires to a standard size make? Is it feasible to swap out to a lower axle ratio or is that cost prohibitive.

you can also get 4.88 in the rear, but i think that might only be an option on the 450. but they do de-tune the engine so you dont blow your trans but if you know someone who works for ford you can get them to reset it so you ge the full power out of the 6.4
