--Would you know it! Just got the 423 built and running mean, went to my favorite salvage yard (hadn't been there for 2 months) and what is sitting in the froor on a stand.. 390HIPO WITH CAST IRON FACTORY headers..Guy behind the counter said they got last week, from a cougar that was stolen and wrecked in a police chase...Jeez just got thru spending $4700 on this last engine, anyway we started looking for the rear bumper I'd orginally came in for but no luck, ask the guy how much for the engine, told me $ 800... hmmm..so..gave him my credit card and had'em load it in the back of my just finished project... felt guilty all the way home, but guess there was no time to get bored, time to start another engine..guess I'll be looking for another 428 crank...sigh...
If that 390 came out of a Cougar, then it would have to be a 390GT engine. You can tell if it is by the head's exhaust ports&exhaust manifolds. They should have four bolts per port, staggered,so 16 per side. The 390GT will also have a 600cfm Holley 4-bbl. carb, and a blue air cleaner base, with a chrome lid,and a decal on it reading either:"3-9-0 CUBIC INCHES HIGH PERFORMANCE",or "390-4V PREMIUM FUEL".Either of these engine decals will be orange, with black&white checked flags at each end.If this 390 has cast iron factory headers,it might have been a 1961-1962 390 HIPO that came in Galaxies and had either a 4 bbl(375hp),or 3x2bbls.(401hp).I've always heard the 390GTs called "390GTs",or "390 S-code".These were the 390s Ford put in midsized, and ponycars from 1966 through 1969.Then again,an early 390 HIPO originally that came in a Galaxie model could have been swapped into that Cougar....to find out more, you'll have to look at factory parts #s of the heads, block, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, etc. to find out what you have.I'm guessing it really is a 390GT engine, because these were optional in Cougars from 1967-1969.Anyway,$800 for a good-running,fresh 390 is a good price.Good luck with it.
Thanks for the info, haven't really spent anythime with her yet, but it did have the hi-rise factory cast iron intake, (no air cleaer) and a rear sump oil pan, valve covers had been chamged out for M/T and the carb is an eldenbrock, will check the exhaust bolts this morning, has a clutch/pressure plate so was a manual tranny..
