I just installed a new set of "real" Auto Meter gauges to my 97 F-150. It's a 4.6 with 180,000 miles that still runs great. The original gauges still work but I wanted to know what my real temp and pressure readings are.
I know what the temps for the engine and trans should be but I'm not sure about the oil pressure.
With a warm engine at 1500 RPM i'm getting about 48 PSI and at idle it's 23 PSI. I'm running 5W-30 oil.
I think the oil pressure looks good but just thought I would look for a second opinion.
The battery and oil pressure guages are glorified idiot lights. They show a set "normal" indication until the input to the guage reaches critical failure levels and then and only then will the indication change. That is what lonerangerinaz was saying, that he was installing real working guages in his truck.
Thats what i kinda figured, i remember reading something like that in the superduty forum. The factory tranny temp gauges were garbage because they didnt go into the yellow or red zone before the temps were already too high and started ruining the tranny.
Thanks LxMan1,
I guess I'm doing ok with my oil pressure. I don't know what a new engine pressure is but it looks likes my engine has some life left.
KingRanchMan02 is right the original gauges really don't act as gauges just idiots lights.
With as many miles as I have I wanted to be able to keep a better eye on my engine and transmission.
