Timing

O.k. I have the timing light, I tried following the instructions in the Haynes manual and it's confusing, I checked out the pully but can't actually see and marks on it just some holes on the front side.

Can somebody help me out here or post a pic of what kind of marks I'm looking for.

I want to check the timing, all I see is a white mark someone put on there.

please help.

how goes it rob,
ok on your harmonic balancer, not the face but on the top side of it there should be a line machined across it. That will be the mark that should line up with the little arrow thats bolted on just to the #1 side of the harmonic balancer. just remember to follow the instructions in the book so you get your timing right

Is the line prominant? or is it just a small etching?

It is a pretty well defined mark, about 1/8'": wide 1/16" deep and 1 1/2" long or the full width of your harmonic balancer. On my 89, it's just clockwise from the 3 little holes in the face of my harmonic balancer. Thats not to say it'll be in the same place on yours, but I hope it gives you a start. What I used to do was after I found the timing mark, was I would mark it with soap stone, or something white to make the mark show up a little better when the light hit it

My '89 has only the 1 mark...I have timed older model fords that have had many differnt marks on the harmonic balancer, and I just did what the book said, or timed by response, but timing by response was on the old carburated engines. But for your question, I would have to look at a book to see what it says, don't want to send the wrong information to you, also don't want to second guess myself....lol. It's been a while and I just can't remember off the top of my head....sorry for the lack of help on this one

How do I know what way to adjustmy timing? the book has different ways for different things. Is my truck an EEC? if so where is the TFI-IV or the single wire SPOUT conector? I see the picture in the manual but I can't find one, I unplugged a single wire piece that was connected to what almost looked like a battery, I adjusted the timing to 10 BTDC and the ideling issue I had went away. did I do this right?
