I will try to make this short as possible... 2001 Ford 350,7.3, DRW, 90k miles, purchased a few months ago. Was told by the old owner that it has the following... Diablo chip, upgraded turbo (don't know what the upgrade was), and AIRAID intake (along with other upgrades like exhaust and guages).
PROBLEM...about 3 weeks ago the air would quit blowing cold every once and a while (other then that it was running fine). Yesterday while pulling a trailer, we slowed down to make a sharp turn and the truck stalled. Put it in neutral and it started back up and went on its way. Right before the stall the a/c quit blowing cold air again. Today...driving 75 mph down the highway and the truck (for lack of better words) acted like the engine missed. First time it did it, it was almost like I hit a pot hole in the road. About 20 miles down the road it did it again, and then another 20 miles it did it again. The second time the "service engice soon" light came on. Got to a gas station, shut the truck off, when I started her back up the light was off and it was running fine for the 2 miles to my house. Dont know if any of theses problems are related to one thing...ANY THOUGHTS?
Sounds like the cps is causing the stalling..On the A/C it could be your clutch or the wire short. My buddys truck had a sort on the high pressure switch before.
I have heard that the cps can cause some wierd stuff to happen. I have replaced the one on my 97' last year when it started to do wierd things. It didnt fix the problem, and of course that was when the cheapest one you could find was like $150 bucks, but It would be nice if that was the problem. Im not used to a truck with a chip in it, so I was affraid that it might be the chip causing problems.
I had the truck scanned today and it is the cps. I have been told that the cps on the 97's are prone to having problems, and was told to keep a spare in the glove box. Is this the same case for the 01' as well? I was also told the cam sensor can cause problems as well? I was just curious as to what spare parts I should keep around for this thing. Im hauling horses to Texas with this truck in November and am not interested in breaking down on the highway! Thanks for the help also!!!
Isn't CPS - Cam Position Sensor?
Mine did about the same thing as yours when it went out! Mine cost me $100 installed under warrenty...a deductible on warrenty work!?!
i would still get a second CPS..its only around 25 bucks..depends where you get it..a surp. belt is also very good to keep on hand..as well as spare fuses..
I 3rd or 4th the CPS, and did the A/C default to blowing out of the defroster, or was it still coming out of the panel vent? If it went to defrost then you have a vacuum leak(as well as the CPS problem). iif it still blew out of the panel vents then the a/c clutch could be going out(less than 100 for a clutch kit and about 45minutes to change it out)

Yes...sorry brain fart...I was doing to many things at one time and was not paying attention to what I was doing! I replaced the one on my 97' with no problem...I hope the 01' is as easy...I have not even looked yet!
Replaced my CPS back around 64k miles....engine has run fine since.
Around 193k miles or so, my air conditioner showed symptoms like you describe. Found the AC coolant was about 1 lb low. Recharge to proper level and AC blows cold. I must have a leak somewhere, we put in dye during the recharge so we can find the leak after driving for a few weeks.

My A/C defaults to defrost almost everytime I start the truck. Where should I check to fix that?

Check your vac. pump( pax fenderwell behind the oblong dome thing) then check the lines coming off the pump for cracks, splits, etc.. Also behind your glove box which by squeezing the sides you can get to tip out forward) is a vacuum splitter(it will have a white vac line, a red one, green, etc) make sure these are all hooked up and not cracked. If your truck is a 4X4 then follow the vacuum lines all the way to the backside of the front hubs and check for leaks.
