just wanted to let everyone know that my 96 crew sb 3.55 gears w33s made 330 hp and 450 lbs of tq at the tires w only 6.5 psi of boost . its even still speed density . dyno tuned to 11.5 afr so it still has more to go but i pull a trailer so lean is not an option. thanks for looking . is there anybody else w a vortech , what kind of #s did you get thanks
Yeah an intercooler would definitely be a great addition, who could complain about more power and reliability!!! Either way sounds like it breaths good from both ends.
I have a 1994 Crew cab, 4x4, 460 E4OD. I have 220,000 miles on the engine and the trans was rebuilt with a billet converter and transgo shift kit, external cooler. The engine runs really good. I also have 3.55 gears and want more power to pull my trailer over mountain passes. I have thought about going with a Vortech but have also wondered if boosting my old engine will cause a failure.
An intercooler will do more for you than just boosting power -it will greatly reduce thermal stress. Given that a gas engine isn't built as heavily as a diesel, the reduction in intake temperatures really is a big deal. One reason Saabs and Volvos run forever IS that they are intercooled.
Just came to this site to search for info about a Vortech on a 460-sweet.
I have a Vortech on my mustang and saw the kit for the 460 trucks (which I also have). The Vortech blowers are made for more of a top end type of engine--as in higher revving. I am interested in how this works on your motor that I assume is still revving at only 4,000 or so. How big of a pulley are you using to get 6.5 psi, and at what rpm are you hitting 6.5 psi? Also, since you must be driving this truck, any other ill effects of using this system? I have heard of the brake system maybe not having enough vacuum to work? You do NOT have a chip, correct? What kind of milage are you getting, or are you pretty much lead-footing it everywhere? If you took it easy driving, it should actually get better milage since its more efficient. I have 35" tires on mine and get about 9 mpg (7.5-8 in the winter).
Im new to forum so i dont know where to post pics . I do have a chip in the truck ,they burned me one at the dyno shop . mileage is around 12-13 semi light footed ( you can only drive so senseable with a blower ) I towed my dads boat at 75mph in od and got a little over 10 . not to bad considering it weighs 7800 lbs . the air fuel ratio at cruise in stock form was 14-15 . my truck is 11.5 at cruise so leaning it out should help mileage but i chose to leave it a little fat due to towing . let me know if you need anymore info . be glad to hook you up w my dyno man as speed density usually makes people look the other way.
I missed a few things I dont have any trouble w brake system . pulley is a 2.62 reider racing ultra grip . and i beleive it makes 6 psi at 3000 and stays pretty flat to 4600 . I will get dyno sheet from the shop so i make sure i dont have anything wrong . Ill post it when i get it
Thanks for the info. I'm sure you know that Vortech doesn't recommend using a chip to lean out the fuel or adjust timing, unless its done by a dyno shop. Most people would have to adjust air/fuel ratio by adjusting fuel pressure and manually adjusting timing (back off until it doesn't ping). Sounds like is works good and makes plenty of pulling power, even at low rpms. I guess that even though the Vortech blower isn't as good as others at making low end power, it is still adding to what the 460 already has.
vortech said the fmu would fix any lean condition under boost . way wrong . it was driven to the shop only once blower was on . good thing too . my afr with any boost was 15-16. they also thought that all 460s were mass air . as there test vehicle was a 97 california truck . i had to purchase a speed density blow off valve desinged for a mustang .with out that the computer would sense boost and freak out . i kind of did my home work with calling around to find out if it could be done . the timing has only been retarded 4 degrees on the top end . noother changes were done to that . i also had to change to 30 lb injectorsbecause evenwith the fmu it would run out of fuel at anything over 3500 . we did away with the fmu and then tuned the fuel curve through the chip . i feel very good about the afr at 11.5 . i did talk to the dyno man and he said the afr is 14.6 at cruise but i will have to drive it more to come up with an actual mileage #. it mostly gets driven on sunny days ,about 2000 miles per year .
I have a super clean 97 F-350 with the 460 in it, and pretty much all I can do to the engine has been done. Still, could use some more power, due to 6" lift, 36 x 15.5 x 16 Mickey MTX's on it. I am really dissapointed in the headers, they didnt seem to help a bit. I think the limiting factors now are the intake and heads, cause the headers didnt help after I did the big exhaust. Sure is a wicked truck though, and a supercharger would be the ticket I think. I dont drive it alot either, and mileage isnt a real concern for me.
