What is the proper igition timing for a 360-turned-into-a-390 in a 1974 F100 two wheel drive. 360 sticker (still on valve cover) says 3 BTDC, but the mark on the balancer is at 6 BTDC, based on my mechanic at the time I rebuilt the engine. Stock engine bored 30 over, 2 barrel, breakerless ignition, C6 auto.
Also, in a 76 F150 4X4 with a 360 and a C6, what would the proper igition timing be? I'm guessing 3 before, based on the sticker in my 74, but want to find out from those who know more than me before I mess with it. No sticker on valve cover, has a 4-barrel intake (390 factory, I believe).
It has been my experiance that best performance is acceived around 10-12 deg.
on My 390 factory timming calls for it to be set at 6* but I set it back to 11* and that really woke it up. If I'm not mistaken the 6* is really an emissions timming.
A guy in the local Ford service department also said around 10 BTDC. I might try it, but I'm "dieseling" now at 6 (or there abouts). I've just gotten in the habit of shutting it off in Drive or Reverse so it won't sputter. If I'm running at 10 or more, won't that just get worse? Or am I thinking backwards?
