Anyone use this cam in their FE? What sort of likes/dislikes do you have about it? If you are using it, what other combo of parts do you have strapped to/in your FE?
I have that cam in one of my 74 F-100's. 390 block, valve timing adjusted to 0, their roller chain, double springs, retainers, Hooker headers with 3" dumps,Accel (sp) ignition, Edelbrock single plane manifold, Carter superquad 750cfm,custom HV oil pump, 460 1 Ton radiator and cooling system, PI heads with steelite seats, bolted to a c 6 auto with shift kit, and the next question you will ask is How does it run? Well, with 3.50 gears and 295X60X15 tires at 40 mph when you nail it, the back end disappears in smoke. Kinda neat but this truck I have never run thru the 1/4 mile. My expectations would be in the mid 13"s unless I can find a way to get more HP to the ground. Forget A/c with this cam. Has a mild choppy idle. With the dumps open, NOBODY will mistake it for stock. For a street cam, I like it alot.
I had the Comp Cams 268H in my 390 powered 1976 F100 and my experience was similar. When I first put the engine back in I went for a drive without the box on it could lay rubber at 60mph. I put on a Holley Street Dominator, 750cfm Holley, Headers and dual exhaust on at the same time so the performance increase was huge over the stock cam, 2bbl, exhaust manifolds and single exhaust. While the engine did have a bit of a lope, it was very torquey.
I'd say this cam is an excellent choice in a 390 street engine.
Hmmmmmmm you all make me want to get this for my rebuild. Is there a stock cam for the 360/390? So is the Comp Cam 268H only 99$? Check it out at summit at this link.
Uh, no. The cam on ebay is for a small block Ford. You need one for a FE series big block. It is only $100 from Summit, however (part number CCA-33-224-3). Keep in mind that you'll also need new lifters, and you should replace your timing set when you replace the cam. You may also need new springs depending on the condition of yours.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Apr-02 AT 04:57 PM (EST)]I'm going to put the Edelbrock Performer Cam in my 390 here's where you can find the specs for [link:www.edelbrock.com/automotive/ford_1k.html|Edelbrock FE Engine Parts]. I've got teh Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, a holley 600cfm carb, Pertronix Ignition, Dual 2 chamber flowmasters, and soon to come a set of 3.5" diamter x 22" long polished stainless exhaust tips. Oh, and did I mention the K&N Air filter, and that the exhaust is made with 2.5" pipe, with a crossover pipe? Sorry I forgot to mention those things....
Thanks for all the replies (even though it took some time for the users to come out of the woods). I only asked because in my flurried state at my machine shop I spec'd a Comp 268H instead of a Comp 265DEH. I haven't put the engine all back together yet so I was just doing a little prodding to see if I should change it out while the motor was still in the stand. Judging from the responses I suppose not! I'll get it fired up someday....
