Explorer Differential Vent Line came off

I was inspecting the under side of my Ford Explorer Sport 2001 today and noticed the differential vent line (I think) came off. There was a bit of oil on the axle. This line is located on the rear axle (looking forward) to the left of the differential. There is a tube that is attached to the body with a breathable end cap on it. So I removed the broken tube piece from the vent valve and reconnected the tube to it. Has anyone ever run onto this before? Im not sure how long it had been like this and am a bit worried that I may have contaminated something. Any thoughts?

your probably o.k , not that uncommon for the rummer hose to crack or fall off on older trucks. you just fix the end and put it back on like you said. i doubt the oil is contaminated, but if you have never changed the lube on a 6 year old truck, you might want to do it sometime. takes 2-3 quarts of gear lube and an hour or two labor. is this a straight axle design? if so, you proabably pull off the rear cover to clean and drain, then refill thru the 1/2 inch pipe plug on the front drivers side of the case.
