I need help. I bought an 85 F250 with what I thought was a 351 CID. It was an auto before and someone converted it to a standard. The clutch was shot so I decided to go ahead and put a auto back into it. I got a C6 out of a junkyard to put in it since I didn't have the money to put a rebuilt one in right now. Well it wouldn't bolt up. I then got the Engine Id # D7TE-A25 googled it and found out it has a 400 CID out of a 70's truck. So now I don't know were to go from here. I am not to familar with Fords. I have worked on mostly Chevy's. I know that Chevy had a Big block 400 and a Small block 400. Did Ford do the same or is it just a Big block? What auto transmission will fit this thing? I am going to take that C6 back to the yard next week and see if I can get my money back.

Welcome to Fords, you'll like 'em. The term "big block" only came in Chebys, the Ford motors didnt have big and small block, even thought the newbs call them that, their not. Its not a big block its just a 400. Just try to find an automatic transmission out of a 70's truck and find the vin and look it up. For an auto i would drain the fluid before you dropped it and spent the $$$ for it b/c you dont know if the transmission is the reason that the truck is sitting their especially at a junkyard. My junkyard at my town pulls the "fairly good" transmissions and puts them in a shop, the same with motors, axles, etc. I hope this helps you in the way to getting her running.
If it is not a big block then why is the bellhousing different on the junkyard C6 that I got that came out of a 80's truck with a 351? I had a hard time finding a used C6 for this when I thought it had a 351. It is really going to suck trying to find one out of a 70's model truck. Do you think that I can make some sort of adapter out of sheet metal and make it work? Just a thought.
the reason your 351 bellhousing didnt fit the 400 is because they are different engine families. If you browse further down this forum youll see different family engine forums. The 351W and 302 are in one category. The 351M, 400 are in a different series. They were used in older trucks. Since they are different families, they utilize different patters. Hope this helps
You can use a tranny from behind a 351M/400/429/460. The 351M and the 400 are identical on the outside. The 429 and 460 are bigger but still use the same bellhousing pattern.
