534?
I just bought a 1971 F250 4x4, and I am GOING to swap in a 477 w/5 speed. I know it revvs low and slow, but it will pull, and that is all I want. All i want to know is the hp/torque specs, so I can decide on a rear end, currently dont have one, running 4.56 Dana 44HD in front with manual steering and drum brakes. I also wish to run dual rear wheels

MY money says that you 1. won't ever get it done, or 2.will wish you hadn't of if you do. That thing is taller wider and longer than your engine room. It is also HEAVY so you won't be able to steer the pickup when you get done. The flywheel(s), there's 2 of them, weigh about 75 pounds. You will need dual wheels on the front of that poor pickup. I installed one of these in a C-800 cabover truck in place of a cummins diesel and it was a squeeze to get it under the cab. The transmission is as big as a 390 block. Why don't you get a 460 and bore it to 494 and you'll have more power and a workable conversion. A stock 460 will put out more power that that 534. I've got a C-600 with a 428 in it and the above mentioned C-800 and the 428 will run circles around the 534. If you can't tell, I don't think this is a good idea, but hey, it's your baby.

We had a C600 with a 534 and it wasn't that hard to work on or around, Plus we've got a C9000 with a Cat diesel, and a C-550 with a 330MD. We've also got a 78 F-750 with a 429. As for it not having a lot of power, it would run rings around our other fire trucks, fully loaded with water, gear and three FF's. And that was a truck that was 35 years old....

The earlier 302 truck engine is based on the original Lincoln OHV V-8 (317.5 cu.in., 1952). Externally it resembled a 239-312 Y-block but few parts interchange. The Super Duty 534 (1958) was a great industrial type engine but it is totally unsuited to high performance street applications.

I bought an engine from a guy thinking it was a 390. Turns out it was a FT block with a 360 crank and pistons with 390 head. You can definitley tell the difference between an FE and an FT block when they are tore down. It came out of an old mud truck. The old truck ripped up the pits pretty good.

Yea the straits are pretty loud . I installed duals with 3 inch core 24" glass packs and it sounds really cool . We installed a rodchester quad on it, and that solved the throttle response problems, it pulls fast and hard to 3500rpm wich is about wound up really tight for that engine. It would fit in the engine compartment of the 73 to 79 fords(I measured) but it would require some bending of fenders and custom exhaust. This engine would work really good in a f350 2wheel drive dually, put the 5 speed trany and the 3.55 gears and you would have one pulling machine. Hope all is well, Mason
