Question: Hellwig Swaybar for 05 Ex?

I'm hoping the braintrust here can provide some assistance. I have an 05' Ex 4x4, and am looking to put the Hellwig sway bar on truck. Looking under the vehicle it appears to have a factory sway bar. Is this correct? If it has the factory sway, would a hellwig provide an improvement? Even with the Bilsteins, it still wanders, so my thought was to add the Hellwig.

I have the original window sticker, and it doesn't appear to be a specific option, but thought it may have come with the towing package.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Wandering is a problem due to axle steer not body sway. The anti-sway bar (regardless of brand) helps minimize body roll. The wandering can be solved with stiffer springs (not shocks), radius rods, maybe an adjustment to your steering gear, changing alignment a bit and/or tire pressure adjustments.

When does it wander?

IMHO--the Hellwigs make a very nice improvement over the stockers in steering quality and helped tremendously with my highway wander. They definitely help with cornering.

My '05 came with the rear bar too, I don;t remember if it was part of the 4x4 towing group or standard with a 4x4.

I'd bet the Helwig would make a huge improvement over a vehicle without a rear sway bar...but wonder how much of a difference it would make over the stock rear bar.

I put one on mine (replacing the factory bar), it made a huge difference in the body roll...I could tell the difference the first 100ft I drove after install. but like Monsta said the sway bar isn't as much for the wandering as for body roll. IMO it IS worth putting it one the truck.

xhunter, you could tell the difference in the first 100 ft that the hellwig made? i think that the factory bar is 30mm. i think the hellwig is 1 1/4" ? thats only .06" difference. i just cant see it. but hey, i didn't have a factory bar. i do have the hellwig and i did make a huge difference.

it just felt tighter turning around the corner in the parking lot. kind of like zero body roll at low speed. like I said I noticed the difference right away but I'm sure its nothing like going from not having a sway bar to the Helwig.

Thanks for all the replies. Monsta, the Ex tends to wander on the highway. This can be tedious on longer road trips. After reading all the posts regarding wandering, I may just need to go with the stiffer springs. Thanks again to all for your help and suggestions.

Play with your tire pressures as well. Those 20's may need different pressures to get the ride right than what is recommended on the door jamb.

Where did you get the adapter for those? I'd like a set of OEM 20's.

Thanks Mike... after I posted my request, I did a search on your posts and found the info.

Now, time to scour ebay for OEM 20's and hope not to pay a small fortune for them!!!

BTW... I assume from your posts you have no suspension mods... Do you have any wheel housing clearance issues?

No suspension mods. The only clearance issue I had was on the left front (firewall side). The was just ever so slight rubbing on hard left turn - under braking. I had adjust the fender liner by about 1/8 inch. A couple of whacks with a rubber mallet, and that did the trick.

The odd thing was that it was only on the left side. We just upgraded my buddies 04 Ex with OEM 20's last weekend, and his exhibited the same problem on the left side. You have to love the rubber mallet!
