Without hirting power, what is the best way to improve fuel mileage? I have an '03 F350 CC 4x4 with the 6.0L. I get about 14 mpg. Is this about as good as it gets?
I think you should get better than that, my 7.3 got 17-18 when it was stock.
Aside from general tune and the normal mileage tweaks and driving habits, only real effective way to affect mileage is to change gearing to reflect where your truck usually spends its time.
Theres a thread on another forum that has real good info on improving mileage, hopefully someone will chime in and help out.
Try the 6.0 forum, they may help as well.
When driving, keep your RPMS below 2000 at all times, including accelerating.
Driving style is the easiest way to gain fuel economy.
Otherwise, check your tires for proper inflation, make sure your towing mirrors (if equipped) are not extended when you're not towing, some PSD owners report slight gains using cetane boosters.
Thanks.
I didn't buy this one for mileage either but would like to know I am getting all I can from it. I am very happy with this truck, my first PSD. My wife drives an Excursion with the V10 and she loves it.
Not bashing you at all here, but you have one of the older 6.0L. Usually when you get one of the first of an engine you don't get the best milage.
A buddy of mine has an 03 7.3, the last year for the 7.3L he gets great milage. Empty driving 55-60 he gets 21mpg. After a couple years of an engine being out the company building the engines plays with them a little and gets better milage.
Start watching the milage on the new 6.4L they aren't great, I have heard 15 or 16 and also low as 10. In a couple years they will be getting 18 or so. It just take the motor couple a little time to work all the kinks out.
Now with that said. MPG is proprtional to your right foot and gears. One of the other guys that replied to this thread said he got 14 but had 4.10. He doesn't get as good of mileage but he can pull easier than a person with 3.73's.
It all a little give and take with the PSD.
In my case I have a 5.4L 04. I don't get as good of milage as people with 05 or 06 because they have a 3V and I have a 2V.
I get 14.5 consistently with the V10 unless I pull anything with it. 3.73's just suck for towing. The 6.0 we have yet is a F450 dumper with 4.88s. Empty weight is 9500 and all it will do is 12mpg empty with the headache rack catching the wind.
