The point was that depending on what the truck will be used for the 8.8 can hold up. There are circumstances where Rockies can't even hold up to the abuse. It all depends on what he wants to do with it. So to just generically say that the "8.8=junk" is not necessarily a true statement. Like in my case, where I don't need the heavy 1 ton axles, I use the 1/2 ton stuff and they hold up fine, even with 38" cut tires. In my case, where weight reduction = faster times, then the D60, D70, Rockies, Sterling 10.25, and all the rest of the heavy 1 ton or greater axles are junk and not worth the money to put them in. Again, it all depends on what the need is. If he's planning on mostly running the streets with some occassional off road use, he will more than likely be able to get away with using the 1/2 ton stuff and save the extra money for other mods. Another example of 1/2 stuff holding up to severe abuse is Monster Baby. I guess his D44 and 9" are junk with all the HP and torque he puts of of that little truck...... All depends on need and use.

but once again, its a straight line truck. Not saying that it's not an amazing truck, but its a super light truck, going in a straight line. Would that d44 up front hold up to having the wheel cut and him hammering it, hell no it wouldnt. You're right, its all about the application, but how many people only hammer it going in a straigh line in mud??????????
But you are right Monster's is a straight line truck, like mine. I'm not trying to say that the 1/2 ton stuff is better than any of the 1 ton or greater stuff. It's just the point that there are a bunch of people out there that say that all the 1/2 ton stuff is always going to fail and is junk, where the original poster never mentioned how he was going to be using the truck, and it seems so much of a waste to pull the axles out from under a truck to swap in a set of of those big beasts just to have it run on the street and never be used hard. Makes it a little more difficult to find cheaper replacements when you need them if they are all under pavement queens.....
Just wanted to give the other side of the coin, not start a war.......
ive gone through the "1/2 ton stage of my life" it worked fine in the begining but every time i add on another upgrade it makes using 1/2 tons more and more difficult.....and with the way i drive d44 just dont buff out!!!
dont waste money on 1/2 ton when whether you like to hear it or not you'll be at least 1 tons with chromos or rocks......i couldn't count all the money i wasted on keeping 1/2 ton.....my worst regret was the d44 sas....what a waste.....
as you can see in my sig.....ive since upgraded a little bit...haha

if they are any bigger than the ones Hummer dealerships sit a couple of their H2's on then you had better go rockies. those at the dealerships are crazy huge and almost impossible unless you're in an H2!
I dont know about yall but around here D60 rears are a dime a dozen. Just about as easy to find as 9" stuff. Its the front D60s thats the problem. I had to go to Ohio to buy mine but the price was right. D60s are heavy but it makes playing in the mud so much more fun when you dont have to worry about breaking junk. Its always better to be over prepared than having "I got to be easy on my 1/2 ton stuff" holding over your head. 60 rear and sas 60 front is my vote as well unless money doesnt permit.
Like you said, D60 rears are so easy to come by, and can be had for easily less than $100. But my only problem with them is: they aren't really that strong. I'd take a D70, sterling, or somthing similar in the rear over the D60.
D60 front is the only SMART way to go. I'm stuck with the d44, and thinking, ok, stay off the throttle alittle so I don't blow anything up... not as fun.
