Okay so I got a 81 F350 for 650 bucks. Now everything works great on it except that the body is pretty much shot with rust. I also have a 91 F150 that the body is in great shape only its a 2wd. Now my question is this, will the parts from a 350 fit on a 150?. Also will it work cause the 150 is a manual tranny and the 350 is a automatic. Any help would be appreciated. Oh yea also the four wheel drive when it is engaged makes an awfull racket (or so the previous owner told me). I havent tried it cause well this bein my first 4x4 and all, I would hate awful much to break it even more cause I am screwin around with it. HE said it is a bearing or somethin that needs to be replaced, any of ya'll know what it might be and the price it would cost to fix??? Thanks in advance.
you're gonna have to provide a lot more info then just the P/O said. you need to engage the 4 wheel drive and find out for yourself what exactly its doing and where the sounds coming from!
as for swapping the drivetrain, that actually wont be too bad. you will have to convert from coils to leafs on the front, then rework your driveshafts, along with make new crossmembers (or possibly swap them from the 350), etc.
the rear axle will bolt up aside from the driveshaft
what's the motor in the donor truck? and what motor in your other truck?
what about both tranny's? more specifics can only help
ell he showed me where it is at and it is on the long side of the axle. The passenger side part of it, and it is where one part goes into another. It is right past the universal and U joints.
Also the 350 has a 351 and the 150 has a 289. So will converting to leaf springs from coils ans all that be a problem??.
if i was you i would sawp everything! motor, tranny, t-case, axles that way you know everything is gonna work perfectly together!
you can either convert the axle to coils or the frame to leafs... you're call but if i was you i'd prolly setup leafs and do a shackle reversal. all your doing is removing the radius arm mounts and bolt up 4 spring hangers
Are you sure the '91 has a 289? I'm pretty sure the only engines available from Ford in the F150 in '91 were the 4.9L (300 cid straight six), the 5.0L (302cid V8), and the 5.8L (351cid V8). So unless it was swapped at some point... Good news is that a 289, 302, and 351 are essentially the same block (I think), so they should swap among themselves readily.
Also, I think Ford put a D50 TTB under the 1980-95 F350s, so your '81 F350 should have a D50 TTB. To be certain, does the front axle on the 350 bolt to the engine crossmember in two places like your '91s front axle? Is there a visible driveshaft with u-joints between the front wheels? If yes, then you have a TTB. The opinions on TTB vs. a solid axle are many and varied and I'm sure someone else will chime in on this point, but I personally do not think you should use the D50 TTB to convert your '91. If you're going to go to the trouble of fabbing leaf spring hangers and such, find a D60 solid axle instead. Plus, the rear axle in the '81 doesn't have a speed sensor that the '91 needs for the ABS. The speedometer may also use that signal to operate. My '92 does, not sure about '91.
If this is going to be a daily driver and not a trail rig with a foot of lift and 49s, find a 5 speed 4wd F150 or Bronco and swap the drivetrain. Its a 100% bolt in if you can source the correct driveshafts. I recently converted my '92 F150 to 4wd and would be glad to offer any advice or help on that swap.
Alright, here's the clincher: Does the '81 have coil or leaf springs in the front? (coils = F150) Additionally, how many lug nuts does it have per wheel? (5 = F150)
ya'll are right again, itsa F250. It has Leaf springs in the front with 8 lug wheels. Sorry its just that the tag on it said f350 but it was from a different truck. So yea if I take the spring shackles and hangers off will they bolt onto the f150??
The front frame horns on F-150 are different I have looked before. If the truck is a F-250 with TTB front end you can probably bolt the axle into where the twin I beam bolts into. The problem will be the front suspension you would have to maybe make custom radius arms and make some spring seats for the coils to sit on.
You will have to change the rear axle too depending on the F-250 the rear axle maybe a Semi Floater Dana 60 or a full floater Dana 60. You will have to have the rear driveshaft on the 91 modified.
Personally I would try find a wrecked bronco to get the parts from it would almost be a complete bolt in. The F-250 will be alot of work to swap in the front axle and rear axle into a F-150.
If the frame is in good shape on the F-250 and the rest of the truck is fine then try find a better body for it. It will be easier to swap cabs then trying to yank all its driveline out and put it into the 150.
The conversion can be done but how much do you really want to spend is the truck really worth doing the conversion on ?
