SPEEDO issues

K, what would be the most likely reason for a mechanical speedo to stop working? would it be the cable, the retainer clip or the gear?

Take the cable off at the trans/transfer, and spin it by hand or with a drill. Have someone in the cab to see if the spedo moves. If it does keep looking.

I think I have a problem . . . I went to remove the speedo cable from the transfer case piece and when I grabbed the cable it just popped right out, I went to pull the retainer off but the bolt is just turning inside the case. Any suggestions? should I get a new one? What is this piece called? it looks like it bolts to the transfer case with 3 or 4 bolts, is it the slip yoke? not sure. and should I get a used one or just buy a new one from Ford?

Also is this part difficult to change or is it just unbolt and then bolt on a new one?

Is the cable still good or did it break? as long as you have 2 or 3 more bolts to hold it in you should be fine. Try prying that bolt out with a screw driver while you turn it. If not try vise grips. Look at the retainer, you should be able to tell if that is good or bad by looking at it.

The cable just slips in and out of the retainer, the cable is fine, I'm assuming there is an issue with the gear, isn't there only 1 bolt holding the retainer? because thats the bolt that is turning.

Anybody have any other suggestions? is it possible to convert a mechanical speedo setup to an electronic one?

I'm sorry I thought you ment the retainer had several bolts. Is the cable supposed to be screwed on to the retainer? I would assume so. I you need to get that bolt out. You can go to an electronic speedo, but (not sure) it should run a sensor off the gear.
What you were talking about it the trans/transfer tailshaft. You could get one from a junkard and replace yours. I would work on that bolt some more first though.

That looks like the retainer is held by a stud and nut. If you have a nut spliter you can cut that nut off. The cable looks good from the pic. I don't know if the retainer is what is broken or not. It may be the sensor that broke. Try to pry the retainer clip up and screw the nut off. Use some pb blaster or something too.

Well I was able to unscrew the retainer bolt but the stud actually unscrewed from the case. I pryed out the piece in there, the cylinder looking thing and I looked at the wonderful yellow gear on the end and it was cracked, however everything looks like it needs replacing anyone have any ideas as to how much this stuff will cost me?
