love my truck and wouldn't trade it...now if you are still interested in the feel, sound, and performance...I'd say 6speed. I love the control with the gears when towing, and the turned heads when having some fun around town...and I think these will just hold up better in the long run
I looked for 8 months before I found my 6 speed in Ok. I had an 96 with an auto before this one I really rather have the manual. You can do a good clutch for around a grand.

Except when the clutch takes out the input shaft.
i have had both and have to say it all depend on preference. They both get spendy when they brake and both will serve their purpose well. I have 155k on my auto and have yet to touch it.
I pull 10k at least once a week and tote the 34' 5er on the weekends.
Dan I thought yours went out becuase of a bad pilot bearing ? Is an inputshaft a common failure?
The pilot bearing helps hold the input shaft in correct alignment.
I don't think the tranny would have failed if the pilot bearing was ok.
It was quiet when I left Seattle for a Colorado vacation and by the time I got back the gear shift was rattling in OD as I was driving along and the tranny would rumble whenever I let out the clutch in neutral.
Draining the oil revealed a ton of metal particles suspended in the oil, it looked like mother of pearl.

Maybe it was a 99 issue, my 99 f350 had two clutches under warranty, the third one I paid for and the fourth one took out the input shaft. I had been told of the possiblility of taking out the shaft, so each time I began to hear the sounds you described I quit using it and got lucky a few times.
It was kind of funny, every time it went out I was on my way home within 100 miles. considering I hauled cars all over the lower 48 it could have been worse I guess.
I think, though it'll be hard, I'm going to look for a 6spd, 4x4. The trick, is finding a ext. cab, not the Crew Cab. I dont need the full 4 doors, nor do I want them. What are you average mpg on a setup like that?
What about if you add 285's? Can you fit 285's on a stock 4x4 without a lift?

285s fit under all our trucks no problem. Why do you want an X cab and not a crew? Remember one thing, all truckish and showing off aside, if you get to playing around with any decent auto, they will blow your doors off in any kind of run, period. Think hard about that and what you want your truck to do. Yeah, they'll get less MPGs doing it but they will run off and leave you in the dust. Pick your poison.
Pulling is another thing altogether and I don't do that, so I will not comment there. The fastest vehicles in most races are autos for good reason.
No it isn't. It can be done, but it takes an entire donor truck to get all the parts you need to change over. When it's all said and done, you possibly could have bought a different truck and come out ahead.
Basically, I want a truck with power to pull when I need to, but I don't need people space. Thats why I want the ext. cab vs. crew cab. I just need enough room behind me to put stuff. Its just me and my fiancee 99% of the time, so like I said people room isn't needed.
If I find a good deal with the crew cab, I might take it. But then again I think the ext. cab looks better. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, I don't know. (people say I'm too young for that though...)
As far as mpg, from what I understand, 4x4 6spd, ought to get somewhere between 15-18mpg average. Which is fine by me. Thats better than the Dodge gasser I drive right now.
