I went to my friendly neighborhood tire store today for my 5000 mile rotate and balance, and as I was BSing around the counter I noticed an add for N2 (nitrogen) to replace the air in my tires. I asked about the cost/ benefits of Ntrogen filled tires, and he said " we just installed the fill system, and I need a guinea pig. So guess what Brandon, your it." and he proceeded to tell the tire changers that there was going to be a training session using my tires. the fill system was a very nice Ingersoll Rand stand alone computer controlled system. After removing my valve cores, and letting the pressurized air out, the core was replaced and a fill hose hooked to my tire. The computer first drew a vacuum on my tire to remove MOST of the residula air, and then inflated them with Nitrogen. after the tires were re inflated the tech used what looked like a pressure guage with a computer hooked to it and got a reading of 99.4% Nitrogen in each tire.
My limited understanding of this technology is... Rubber(tires) is porous and the smaller O2 molecules can leak out of these small permeations. the Nitrogen Molecule is larger than that of Oxygen and cannot fit through these small pores, so your tires do not leak down over the months. Also temperature does not effect the nitrogen as much as Oxygen.
Plus I got some COOL new green valve stem caps.
I hav eheard that the Motorcycle guys, and the Racing guys have been doing this for years.
Mine fill up was free since I am the tester, but the tire Dealer said it would be $10 per tire after installation, or $5 per tire during installation. return checks and maintaining the fill are free for the life of tire.
I though it was a cool thing and thought you folks might like to know about it.
The biggest plus for nitrogen is that it has less expansion and contraction over a temperature fluctuation, so pressure stays closer to the target than air does.
Of course, our "regular" air is about 90 percent nitrogen already.
Brandon, that's cool that you're a tester and got it for free.
I'll be curious to see how your pressures behave as the winter months come about.
he said it was to let me know i have nitrogen in my tires..i said i know its in there get them caps off..man a black truck with all chrome and SS..them tiny little caps jumped out at you..
