Cliff sometimes windshield technicians don't put the sensor back on correctly.some techs reuse the old mounting tapes.finger print on the tape. All reasons a sensor won't read condensation correctly. I have seen a tiny percentage windshield defects that caused the sensor to fail.

Here is how I deal with windshield chips and cracks.

1. Call State Farm agent and tell them my windshield is chipped.
2. Call my glass guy and have him replace the glass.
3. Re-tint if needed depending on which piece of glass.
4. ???
5. Profit.

Why would I involve the insurance and have claim on my record for $129 windshield replacement?
My time it would take is worth more than that.

I personally can replace two windshields annually and it does not effect my premium at all. I don't want to call it free glass but it doesn't cost me to replace it if its broken or severely pitted.

So now we should compare the insurance premiums to see how much it really cost

Lol I wish it was just glass that raised premiums.I hate insurance companies. I've worked in the auto glass industry for around 15 years so if you ever have a question I will try to help

I have replaced one windshield and repaired the second on this 2010 F350 due to rocks hitting it. My 2000 F250 had many rocks hit it but it never chipped or cracked. I'm not sure where I read it but someone said the new windshields do not have as much lead in the glass as it used to due to federal government regulations.

I hate US insurance business as well. Even my F250 insured as a commuter cost me about $300 a year for liability, I am forced to pay 3 premiums on myself as I own 3 vehicles. In Europe I could insure the driver for 1 premium and drive all I could with it.
