Since our diesel trucks use fluid off the power steering pumps to boost the brakes as well and overly heavy low speed steering while brakes are applied is a common problem, has anyone tried installing an upgraded power steering pump? How about swapping it out for an honest-to-goodness hydraulic pump (gear? vane? piston?) that has the capacity to handle all the demands? What about a full on load-sense hydraulic system?
Most steering pumps are already vane or gear pumps, with a flow control installed to maintain a constant flow no matter the shaft speed. Otherwise, the faster the engine spun, the more flow and the faster the steering would respond (dangerous at highway speeds)
Piston pumps would work, but there is normally not enough filtration on the steering (and braking with hydroboost) systems to keep a piston pump happy for long.
Long story, but I installed their Saginaw Super pump and the first pump leaked from the seals before I ever lowered the front end off the jacks, then the second pump was installed and made no difference in the steering of the truck at a stop. That pump broke 10 minutes after i installed when I was turning around in my drive. The shaft sheered right off on the pulley and made a damn big mess of fluid...I have since gone with a stock pump and a highly modified steering box from PSC and have the best results possible w/out switching to a full hydro ram assist kit...AGR sold out years ago and quality is now a thing of the distant past. It's a good thing the pump failed in my drive rather than on the highway where people could have been killed...
Wow, good to know. I would hate to go through what you went through. Which model PSC steering box did you go with? Has it helped the low speed steering a lot?
I went with the option where you ship your box to them, them port out the inside for better flow etc. and I also had it tapped for fittings to run a ran assist if I choose to in the future. Steering is one finger when rolling, and although much better you cannot turn the wheels fully on rough surfaces when stopped. I may add a ram soon only because it would not be much to add at this point...
I ordered the PSC steering pump kit. It comes with the seperate Res and all the fittings and hoses for the intsall. Gonna try to install it this weekend. I've posted a few Pic's in the link below under(Pg-3,My Public shoe Box) If any one cares to see it. Take Care Country

How much did that run you and what was the turn around time?

I'm with everybody here, my truck is very hard to steer when I'm parking it and I dont like that.
Country looks like your doing exactly what I would be doing. Please do let us know how it goes, and good luck!
Hey Guys, sorry it took me so long to get back with yah. I was out of town on a job the last couple of days with no Internet acces. Yeah they don't show the kit on the site for some reason. I actually got the kit off e-bay. I'll check it for a part number, but I've had sitting in my garage now for about 8-months now. Just haven't been able to install it yet. I just checked the kit for a Part number and couldn't find one. The number for PSC is (817)270-0102, they will put one together for yah. I tried to find the receipt also because I don't remember what I paid for it, and I can't seem to find it. Dang-it, I haven't even had beer yet either and already I'm lost. The forecast is calling for rain here also, so it might have to wait till next weekend. I'll let ya'll know if I get it done though. Sorry I'm not much help here today. Country OH you want to talk to Tom (owner) or Kalvin in technical support and sales. These guys are great. Very eager to help and and answer all your questions. Take Care Country

Funny thing is when I bought my truck it didn't have the typcial high effort steering, especially if you are on the brake. But the pump was noisy when cold so I changed it out. Now it's like every other PSD SD out there. Go figure... it's quiet tho!
