New to diesel but learning more and more every day. I need to install some gauges. Need some feedback. You guys have been great helping me out so here it is. Which gauges should I get? I'm thinking boost, fuel pressure and oil pressure. Thanks!!
I went with pyro, boost, trans temp. Bought them from DIESEL MANOR, ISSOPRO 3-piller gauge kit. Good instructions come with them. I like them because they match my factory gauges. There are many out there, just pick what is best for you and install them. Have fun.
as miller said you want to start with EGT, boost, and trans temp (if you have an auto) if you want the gauges to match your factory gauges get autometer Z-seris
You will want an exhaust temp pyrometer if you are doing any mods. The ISSPRO are color coded on the dial to let you know when you are getting into dangerous temps. These are the Gauges used by many semitruck manufacturers so are reliable and acurate. Boost pressure is also handy to have. I have the pillar mounts on my truck.
I'm surprised, with so much focus on fuel and oil pressure, I thought they would be near the top. When and how does the egt affect engine performance??

When you do modifications on your vehicle (i.e. tuners) many of the tunes cause your EGT's(exhaust gas temp) to increase, espeicially when towing or just screwing around, if it gets to high it will severly damage your engine and your turbo. And the gauge on you dash in more of a glorified idiot light, by the time it goes all the way up the components are all ready toast. As far as tranny temp this is usefull when your towing or just screwing around to make sure you don't over heat it, and cause you to have to replace that too.
Borrowed this from:bdrummonds
These engines with a good chip can produce above 1250* F in the exhaust temp. if you run for a while at above 1250* F heat stoke starts to set in and things(valves, pistons blocks) start to deform, crack, melt....You get the picture. Thats why you need to know how hot your EGT's are.

A normal chip will increase the oil presure ( for fuel system ) , more fuel more heat, and then as the last thread said, more heat, possible damage..
